What Are Free Runs?

Free Runs are one of the three types of Chocobo Races available to players. Free Races serve as a way for you to practice for Official Races. They also reward players with chocobucks. Unlike Official Races, there is no limit to how many times you can do free races in one day.

Cost

Free runs are not exactly free, they require gil to be entered. The entry fee goes up after each race, but the fee resets at midnight (Japan).

Entry Fee:

1. 100 gil
2. 150 gil
3. 200 gil
4. 300 gil
5. 400 gil
6. 600 gil
7. 800 gil
8. 1000 gil

Note: After the 8th race the gil will rise by 500 each time until it reaches 10,000 at which point it will rise by 1,000 gil until it reaches 100,000 gil, which is the cap.

Chocobucks

Free Races reward players with chocobucks. The amount of chocobucks given depends on how well the chocobo does in the race.

• First place will reward you with 5 chocobucks.
• Second place will reward you with 3 chocobucks.
• Third place through seventh place will reward you will 1 chocobuck.
• Last place (8th) has no reward.

Chocobucks can be traded at Chocobuck Exchange Centers for prizes. Prizes include food, items, and special training sessions for your chocobo.

How Do I Participate?

First, players must be raising an adult chocobo and have obtained a CRA racing form (available from a trainer) or have a chocobo out to pasture and possess its VCS registration card. Next, players must visit one of the CRA branches located in San d’Oria, Bastok, and Windurst, and register their chocobo to race.

CRA officials have been dispatched to the following locations:

San d’Oria

• Southern San d’Oria – Alangriche
• Northern San d’Oria – Monteverle
• Port San d’Oria – Ramiene

Bastok

• Bastok Mines – Jazgeh
• Bastok Markets – Galienne
• Port Bastok – Salvador

Windurst

• Windurst Waters - Turumi-Byrumi
• Port Windurst - Lhimo Keanyohn
• Windurst Woods - Rungaga

Register Your Chocobo

Chocobos can be registered at any of the aforementioned CRA branches by trading to the representative either of the two documents (obtainable from a chocobo trainer):

• VCS Registration Card
• CRA Racing Form (free)

Notes:

• Only adult chocobos can participate in races.
• Players may only register one chocobo at a time.
• If a chocobo’s attributes change after CRA registration, players must re-register their chocobo for those changes to be reflected.

Novice Races

Before you can race you must use the "Race Against Others" option while raising a chocobo. After you complete the race you will be invited to the Novice Races. Once you've completed all three, the Free Runs option unlocks.

Note: Once you have completed the novice races you will not have to do it again for any subsequent chocobos you raise.

Notable Opponents

These three opponents the most difficult to beat and are frequently seen during free runs. They are unofficially known as the Super Chocobo's. If one of them is present for a race, it will be racing out of lane 3. On rare occasions, all three will enter one race together.
