First off, brush up on the Call wyvern GUI.png Wyvern (Dragoon Pet) page if you never have. There is information in there that I brush over because it is already in there.

For the past several years this job has lacked a guide, and it has been harder for curious players to learn about it. Basic questions about subjobs, weaponskills, or the position of DRG in endgame goes unmentioned.
To be fair I was just going to put some basic sets on a page and call it a day, but that just didn't feel right, and a couple weeks later here we are.

Why DRG?

So in a world where DRK, WAR, and even DD Runefencers exist. Why would you want to be a Dragoon? Personally, my reason is simply because I can.

Dragoon excels in low-to-mid level support situations. It sports a higher Weaponskill frequency over other jobs along with defensive abilities that heavier DDs lack.

Pros:

  • Third highest natural attack behind DRK and WAR.
  • Piercing damage is the most frequent physical weakness in the game.
  • Wyvern benefits come with no direct drawbacks, can not be dispelled, and may be maintained fulltime. Wyverns are also rather resilient on their own thanks to their native -40% Damage Taken (DT) which helps to soak up AoE damage and abilities. Wyvern bonuses as well as other defensive options provide a Dragoon better survivability over other damage dealers.
  • Possesses two separate abilities to reduce enmity. Super Jump is the only ability in the game that provides complete immunity from any and all attacks.
  • Restoring Breath is available regardless of the player's support job and provides a free 2,000+ HP restoration to any party member when properly geared.
  • Your wyvern will always be your friend if no one else is.
  • Has access to three of the four level 2 Skillchain properties natively with the fourth provided via the Relic Polearm. This makes a DRG excellent at skillchaining for extra damage.
  • A DRG in possession of the Aeonic Polearm will have access to what is possibly the strongest 4-step skillchain in the game as well as the ability to easily close Umbra or Radiance level 4 skillchains.
  • Spirit Surge combined with Fly High can provide a nice emergency boost of damage via the capped Job Ability Haste, STR and Accuracy bonus, -20% defense down, and TP reduction effects added to Jump and High Jump. These also can't miss during the duration of Spirit Surge.
  • Angon provides an unresistable -25% defense down effect. When combined with other defense down debuffs this may allow you to cap your Attack to Defense ratios (PDIF) without having to resort to abilities such as Bolster or Soul Voice.

Cons:

  • Similar to Samurai, Dragoon's weaponskills are weaker than that of other DDs, but sport great Skillchain compatibility. You will be pushing quantity over quality.
    • For example Great Sword is absolutely horrible for self skillchaining with itself on a job like Warrior or Rune Fencer, but Resolution goes completely bananas with damage when it is buffed up in endgame.
  • The loss of your wyvern eliminates a great deal of your DD power.
    • The wyvern is on a long 20 minute cool down.
  • In high level support situations it has less power potential than that of other heavy DDs. Which is the reason DRG isn't bandwagoned.
    • Then again people Bandwagon BLU and try to take it to the same high level situations over heavy DDs so why not?

Roles

As a DRG your primary role is to DD with the formation of optimal Skillchains.

As a secondary role you are capable of subbing mage to trigger Healing Breath from your wyvern, but in an era full of Trusts this is generally unnecessary.

Apache, Jump On It!

Understanding your jumps is a fundamental part of playing DRG.

Due to Job Ability Delay, Jumps should be used to reach 1,000+ TP. Otherwise you suffer a two second delay to your auto-attacks.

Which jumps to use:

  • Jump lowers the target's defense (-20% for 1 minute, does not stack with, but overwrites Angon).
  • High Jump lowers the target's TP proportionately to the amount of damage dealt (TP is reduced by damage × 2).
  • These are the bees knees while your wyvern is alive as they will offer double and triple TP return.
  • Super Jump usage is obvious; when you don't want hate. It also reduces the enmity of the player behind you during Spirit Surge.
  • Super Jump can also be used to avoid or stop TP moves, if timed properly.
  • During Two-Hour ability Spirit Surge, it will also reduce the enmity of the nearest target behind you by 50%.
  • Not sure of the distance limit on this, but be sensible.

Spirit Surge and Fly High:

  • Spirit Surge would be a lot more useful if the wyvern timer wasn't a lifetime away. With the old Adoulin era change of the wyvern's presence granting buffs to you it has really lost it's shine.
You lose the superior wyvern buffs upon the use of Spirit Surge as well as the superior TP gain from Spirit/Soul jump despite the fact your Jumps won't miss with Surge active.
So in order to realistically gain the most use from this ability it is best reserved for when your wyvern timer is not ready and you are in imminent danger of losing your wyvern. This will eventually happen, and this way you may at least maintain some buffs.
  • Fly High is at least more useful, although still leaving something to be desired. A minute duration would have been more appropriate given the cool down of jumps with it active is still 10 seconds for a 30 second duration.
So, stand out situations for this would be to eat up your jump timers as it resets them and:
  • You just want a bit more DPS.
  • You are not capping haste and/or attempting to skillchain.
  • You just used Spirit Surge and might as well.
  • High Jump under this situation is nice for lowering the TP of the enemy, and certainly one of the best perks against certain opponents.

Buffs to Jump:

  • In the case of multi attack procs you will also gain extra TP.
  • Relic and Empyrean weapons reportedly do not proc extra damage on jumps, womp-womp.

Jumps and Jump Bonus Gear
Jump bonus gear and the text accompanying it has been inconsistently implemented over the years and does not always work universally.

  • "Jump: TP Bonus" equipment only affects the first hit of Jump and High Jump.
  • "Jump: Double Attack" equipment works with all jumps.
  • "Jump: Accuracy" equipment is assumed to work with all jumps.

Equipment particulars include the following:

Merits

Group 1
Name Description Level Notes
Ancient Circle Recast Shorten recast time by 10 seconds. 0/5
Jump Recast Shoten recast time by 2 seconds. 0~5/5 Applies to both Jump and Spirit Jump.
High Jump Recast Shorten recast time by 4 seconds. 0~5/5 Applies to both High Jump and Soul Jump
Super Jump Recast Shorten recast time by 6 seconds. 0/5
Spirit Link Recast Shorten recast time by 3 seconds. 0~5/5 While Jump 5/5s are an offensive boost, Jump itself becomes a small gain while capping haste.
The real value in jumps is while slowed, continuing or boosting SCs, maintaining AM, or shedding enmity via High Jump, and not as an endgame DPS weapon.
By contrast the 15 seconds off Spirit Link, especially over the course of a longer fight with AoEs may very well save your wyvern which is worth more than Jumps.
Group 2
Name Description Level Notes
Deep Breathing Enhances effect of next wyvern breath. Recast: 5min
Enhance effect by an additional 10%
0/5 There is really only one choice to make here, and this is not part of it.
Angon Expends an angon to lower an enemy's defense. Recast: 3min
Increase defense down duration by 15 seconds.
5/5
Empathy Copies beneficial status effects to wyvern when using Spirit Link.
Increase number of copied effects by 1 and experience points obtained by 200.
5/5 An absolute must. Allows your wyvern's maxed parameters with a single Spirit Link.
Strafe Effect Increases accuracy of wyvern breath.
Increase accuracy by 10.

Support Jobs

Myochin Kabuto icon.png Samurai

The defacto sub. There is little reason to sub anything else.
This has been tethered to DRG since the dawn of the job, and it likely will never change. That isn't a bad thing though as it really powers you up to your max potential.
The offensive capabilities of /SAM simply outweigh what any other sub can provide.

Fighter's Mask icon.png Warrior

The benefits of /SAM generally outweigh the gains of /WAR. Hasso alone would be reason enough, but in a full buff situation when attack and accuracy cap it is 10% Double Attack versus Hasso, Store TP, Meditate, and Sekkanoki. Clearly it doesn't outweigh it, and in a low buff situation the Hasso alone kicks Double Attack to the curb.
Yes this was a popular sub for the brief Voidwatch Era, but that is gone, and so is the use for this sub. So close, yet so far. Then again we should really just make DRGs the defacto tanks with provoke, right?!
Sure, there are some builds or situations that make /WAR a good choice, but honestly it isn't what it used to be otherwise.
TL;DR You generally need Hasso to cap the last 1.3% delay. Which makes /SAM significantly better when the benefits are tallied up. In a buffed situation though if you have Haste Samba or Spirit Surge (for the fight duration) then /WAR will be a DPS gain.

Chaos Burgeonet icon.png Dark Knight

This sub competes with /WAR for how niche/unnecessary it is. Last Resort would be truly useful for the 15% JA haste if your wyvern was out of commission on rare occasion (otherwise it is 5% over Hasso or possibly useless if you are buffed) and if it somehow didn't kill the STP in your TP/WS sets much like WAR also does.
The saving grace of this over /WAR is the gain of a multipurpose wyvern really. Then again if the Healing Breath doesn't come into play then you could be losing potentially over 1,000 damage on a geared/unresisted elemental breath over /WAR from access to an an offensive wyvern.

Dancer's Tiara icon.png Dancer

This has to be mentioned since newer players seem to sub it for some reason. Given the fact Healing Breath exists. Half the wind is already out of the sails here. At the very least you gain Skillchain Bonus and Healing Waltz, but really there is no real gain from this sub.

Runeist Bandeau icon.png Runefencer

Highly situational, you will know if you need to sub this against some magical foe, but don't expect it to come into play. It also provides a multipurpose wyvern which heals you at 25% HP, 33% with the AF Helm.

Ninja Hatsuburi icon.png Ninja

Another highly situational sub for avoiding certain TP moves. It also provides a multi purpose wyvern. The main issue I have with that is justifying the use of DRG over another DD subing /NIN in the first place.

Magus Keffiyeh icon.png Blue mage

Probably the best of the two subs for a defensive wyvern to heal yourself or pt memebrrs with. Foot Kick and Power Attack make good trigger spells while Cocoon allows you some hardiness. The rest of the spells are for stat boosts. This really comes into play when you are leveling up to 75 (although Trusts exist), in a shiity Omen card farm, or some other odd situation.
To be fair, back in the day this is one of the things that really made DRG cool. A "heavy DD" that could heal itself? No way. I remember having a blast just soloing lesser colibris to chain 5 at level 58-60. Certainly a sub any DRG should still have, I mean those challenging BCNM or NM solos won't just inefficiently drag themselves out now will they?!

Healer's Cap icon.png White Mage / Duelist's Chapeau icon.png Red Mage

The other sub for a defensive wyvern. Considering you can heal the status ailments of party members after every breath it is hard to justify the -na spells. The best thing this or /rdm can provide are the buffs/haste/better cures, and perhaps the refresh, but then again with finite MP the wyvern needs to be the one curing.

Scholar's M.board icon.png Scholar / Wizard's Petasos icon.png Black Mage

I don't even know why we are talking about these, and that goes for any other unmentioned subs.

Weaponskills

Polearms:

Unlike certain jobs where you only spam one WS, Dragoon has several to gear up and use many. Mostly due to skillchaining which is covered next.

  • Stardiver - Our strongest WS outside of a few situations. If you can't form a SC due to being surrounded by DDs then you just spam this. The damage on your Stardivers will go up significantly with proper gear and buffs compared to being solo.
  • Drakesbane - When properly geared and using a Ryunohige, this should actually do more damage than Stardiver. Otherwise for ordinary weapons it will not. Drakesbane stands out for damage in Abyssea (not that it matters anymore) and the fusion skillchain property attached to it. Otherwise Drakesbane suffers from ~19% attack penalty and a lower modifier than Stardiver.
  • Camlann's Torment - Another WS that sports solid WS properties. Any very old DRGs will understand when I say that this is just an upgraded version Wheeling Thrust. As such it sports the same uses. Outside of SCing this WS is to be used when you are underbuffed. Which is not to be confused with simply lacking buffs which still leads to Stardiver more than Camlann's. This means against evasive targest where hits of Stardiver are missing and/or very defensive enemies. Otherwise Stardiver overshadows this significantly.
  • Sonic Thrust - Similar to Camlann's without the defense penetration, but on a very narrow conal AoE. This is actually the strongest physical AoE WS in the game. It is also used to create a darkness multistep with Stardiver. Meaning you need to gear it to go romp around on things solo.

Staves:

  • Retribution - As far as I know this is our best staff weapon skill over Full Swing. Retribution gains a nice 50% attack bonus with better skill chain properties. Just use the same gear set for this that you do for Sonic Thrust.
  • Shattersoul - Really pretty "meh" on DRG, but used to skillchain with Retribution. The modifier is purely INT so honestly I would just forget about maxing it with yet more gear and use the same set you do for Stardiver with SC damage gear on top of it.

Skillchains

No DRG is complete without some Skillchain Knowledge.
SCing is important due to all the extra damage it provides, much more than your weapon skill itself will do. Multistepping, or creating multiple skillchains off of previous skillchains increases the damage of a skillchain more and more each step. The window to create another step becomes shorter and shorter after each. Initially the window for a skillchain starts at 10 seconds between WSs to count. Each step reduces that time down by about 2 seconds until reaching 3 seconds.
Overall thanks to Spirit, Soul Jump, and Spirit Link it is easy to multistep by yourself.

All primary WS properties are used first to create a SC, and if no SC is created then secondary properties are used.

  • So if s WS has a secondary property you wish to use. It won't work unless the primary property is not utilized to make a SC first.

Level 1 → 2:

  • Liquefaction SC Icon.png Liquefaction → Impaction SC Icon.png Impaction = Fusion SC Icon.png Fusion

  • Transfixion SC Icon.png Transfixion → Scission SC Icon.png Scission = Distortion SC Icon.png Distortion

Level 2 → 3:

  • Gravitation SC Icon.png Gravitation → Fragmentation SC Icon.png Fragmentation = Fragmentation SC Icon.png Fragmentation
  • Distortion SC Icon.png Distortion → Fusion SC Icon.png Fusion = Fusion SC Icon.png Fusion

  • Fusion SC Icon.png Fusion ↔ Fragmentation SC Icon.png Fragmentation = Light SC Icon.png Light
  • Gravitation SC Icon.png Gravitation ↔ Distortion SC Icon.png Distortion = Dark SC Icon.png Dark

Level 3:

  • Light SC Icon.png Light ↔ Light SC Icon.png Light = Light SC Icon.png Light
  • Dark SC Icon.png Dark ↔ Dark SC Icon.png Dark = Dark SC Icon.png Dark

Empyrean and Relic WSs are the only WSs with a level 3 (light or dark) property. These may be used to create light and dark with themselves.

  • Under Aeonic Aftermath all merit WSs gain a light or dark property too allowing for level 3s while it is active.

You may make a double light or dark SC, but this must be done with a level 2 → 3 resulting in light or dark and then a relic or empyrean level 3 WS following it to create the second light or dark.

  • Level 3 skillchains can not make double light or darkness off of themselves.

Suggested Skillchains

Note: Trishula icon.png denotates the need of Trishula to continue the SC.

  • This just adds the option of extending your SC one addition step for more damage as Stardiver already has a secondary property of Transfixion.

That is about it, Staff gets crap weapon skill properties.

Equipment

Weapons

If it isn't listed here then don't bother with it!

Eminent Lance icon.png Eminent LanceEminent Lance description.png - Likely your first big kid Polearm.

Upukirex icon.png UpukirexUpukirex description.png - This should be the goal set for stepping up to a better weapon after the Eminent Lance. If this is somehow too lofty of a goal then settle for a KumaloKumalo description.png.

Areadbhar icon.png AreadbharAreadbhar description.png - The base weapon is weaker than good ole Upu, but stronger after augmenting it especially if you need the accuracy. Given the monetary investment to this mediocre weapon I would honestly skip it for the next one.

Olyndicus icon.png OlyndicusOlyndicus description.png - Surprisingly this weapon is going to be one of the best you can use before an Ultimate Weapon or endgame NMs, with very high or maxed augments. It blows away the previous weapons. Generally players shouldn't bother with augmenting Alluvion Skirmish Weapons nowadays due to the time/monetary investment, but this polearm can go further than other weapon types due mostly to lack of better alternatives until much later. Besides, you can say that you carry around a big Olyd dickus, and that is worth something too, right?

  • Augment this with 30~38 DMG+, Double Attack +5~6%, and Acc/Atk +15~20.

Rhomphaia icon.png RhomphaiaRhomphaia description.png - This is a weaker weapon than a properly augmented dicus, but augments are fixed so perhaps you will prefer this instead.

  • Augment this on path B

Habile Mazrak icon.png Habile MazrakHabile Mazrak description.png - This is an easy replacement to your Rhomphaia or a less than perfect (even slightly) Olyndicus. This is one of the least desired items from Warder of Courage, and as a result you may be able to easily pick this up. the Warder is much more difficult than Hanbi though which may limit access to this for some.

Annealed Lance icon.png Annealed LanceAnnealed Lance description.png - Never drops, but if it somehow did then it is roughly equivalent to the Habile Mazrak. The icon may look pretty, but it is the same glowy lance that comes from Bismarck, and is pretty ugly. It is one of those sort of things you might consider looking at after a few drinks though.

Lembing icon.png LembingLembing description.png - This is a tad better than the Habile Mazrak. IF you don't have a REAM, and hate augmenting weapons or farming Odin then this is for you.
Which it shouldn't be because you love being an awe inspiring DD, right? The issue with this weapon is mostly that it comes from a tier 4 HELM NM in Reisenjima. The same one you need in order to clear Aeonic Weapons. So chances are that if you are capable of farming this NM for the polearm then you are already capable of making Aeonic or better options already.

Reienkyo icon.png ReienkyoReienkyo description.png - Assuming that this augments the same as the Zulfiqar Great Sword and assuming reasonably good (not maxed, but still annoying to get..) augments. Then it should be better than the Rhomphaia, Habile Mazrak, Lembing, and better than a perfect Olyndicus.
It will definitely shine if the chunk of accuracy provided by the weapon and augment comes into play, but that is obvious.

  • Augment this with DMG+, Atk/Acc +, and DA+.
  • For example, DMG +22, Acc/Atk +20, STP +5/6 would be a keeper with room for improvement, aim for Double Attack.

Geirrothr icon.png GeirrothrGeirrothr description.png - You would be excused for not knowing anything about Odin's various guises, in this case Grímnir. After all, who can keep up with that long winded "a fancy tree with too many consonants holds nine worlds together" crap?
At any rate, if you farm for this item you will be able to wield the best conventional non-REAM polearm and can thus skip ever augmenting a Reienkyo as it beats that easily. This also keeps you from having to get into a nerd battle over Shining One or changing your play style.
Without taking the jump bonus or defense down into account, this is roughly right behind a non-augmented Gugnir. Obviously if you only had that then you would augment it at least a little bit, but who am I to make such suppositions?

Staves come into play on various creatures, mostly the undead. Corses, Skeletons, Narakas, Yggdreants, etc all have a -50% damage taken to piercing. The undead variety also have a +25% weakness to blunt damage.
There is no spreadsheet for DRG that handles staves so this is played by ear. Luckily there are only two real choices to decide between.

Gozuki Mezuki icon.png Gozuki MezukiGozuki Mezuki description.png - Until recently this was the very best staff for DRG, but it comes from an Aeonic T4 NM and it is rather hard to win over random mages gear whoring. It is debatable which is better between the next staff NQ and this, but it certainly should lose to the +1.

Exalted Staff icon.png Exalted StaffExalted Staff description.png (Su2) - This staff is cake to make, and easy to find on the AH. The +1 will cost a bit more though. The WS damage for Retribution is the redeeming factor on it otherwise it would lose to the Mezuki easily without it. The only stymie is the fact you need 100 Job Points before you can wear it.

Ultimate Weapons

Augment Rank 0
Rather than amend the entirety of this to suit REAMD Rank 15 augment weapons. I figured it make sense to leave the info for both. Afterall, the target audience of the guide likely needs this info as much as what proceeds it.
Gungnir is third in the hierarchy of non-augmented Ultimate Weapon polearms and dead last in the R15. From a devils advocate position this can be said of it:

The defense down proc may be helpful to party damage as may be the accuracy boost from Afterglow. After all, we aren't always playing in these perfect or rightful situations people argue over online.
Any situation where that +60 accuracy really comes into play will see Gungnir outperform the rest of your options. This would require accuracy to be below 80% though, and likely then the party is also struggling which makes it all rather moot to me.
Accuracy is really easy to come by anymore compared to when this was released, and you can't nearly match the power of other weapons by swapping gear around to make the most of it. Support jobs and especially gear have come a long creeping way.
Therefore, you may eventually find yourself in the right situation for it, especially if your Stardivers are missing. If you finally do then this weapon may shine if the fight isn't already a lost cause.
The last (only?) silver lining is that Geirskogul is our only distortion weapon skill. Given the 40% boost from Gungnir and that the weapon skill is a Camlann's Torment clone, this makes Geirskogul the best option for closing light or gravitation opened darkness which is of some real merit if you coordinate.
If you take the time to gear it properly then Geirskogul also performs better than Camlann's in general, especially when your attack is capped. It isn't about "just changing to SAM" if you want to skillchain either. You are here because you want to play DRG, damn it.
Overall, this should be the cheapest and easiest R0 Ultimate Weapon for any DRG to make and call it "Good Enough".

  • Favors a 5-hit Double Attack build, and situations where accuracy is starved.
Aside from even the fact that Farsha receives STR for it's split property weapon skill and Rhongomiant does not, this is still a great weapon, and comes in at #2 in the ranks.
Unfortunately while it wins on spreadsheet paper it doesn't beat a Trishula in reality or via the simulator unless some uncommon or unrealistic situations occur:
  • If you are maintaining AM3, but are getting amnesiaed.
  • If you are underbuffed against serious targets with no COR rolls, especially Samurai roll.
    • This is generally only ever a slight win of roughly ~1-2% and is easily negated by any skillchaining in a fight, even if you aren't attempting to create any.

No, the 50 VIT doesn't "count for something" as people who really want to like this may grasp at, and no the Afterglow really doesn't help anyone unless they use a critical hit weapon skill with no AM of their own overwriting it. This weapon has a wider variance in it's final DPS than Trishula due to the AM3 so a tie is ultimately a loss in those two ways.
Stardiver is also easier to gear up in strength than Camlann's as well.
The only real reason to make this weapon is if you were somehow gated from an Aeonic or buying wins for one. This obviously is almost our best R0 weapon, but there is no solid reason to invest such a good deal of time and money into what is at best an "almost" and for most a "nope" in performance.

  • Favors a 5-hit Double Attack build. Requires Aftermath level 3 active to be a real contender, but luckily Jump makes this easier.
  • With this weapon you should be a bit more conservative with your Soul and Spirit jumps in order to maintain AM3.
Stardiver is our best weapon skill, and this weapon is the best for spamming it. That is right this weapon is the wyvern's meow (they meow, right..?) and really brings the DPS and skillchaining house down upon the mobs.
Not only does the weapon provide the ability to create Umbra and Radiance, a feat which Dragoon may do solo thanks to Jumps, Wyvern Haste, and Spirit Link. However, (with AM active) it allows for spamming darkness over and over via Stardiver spam.
With skillchains taken into account this weapon should defeat any other. Succeeding in this is a different matter entirely when you have several DDs all weapon skilling at once though, but even then SCs do happen regardless.
Once our mightiest weapon to rule them all, but now arguably it is the worst R0. It is still better than ordinary weapons, but time has not been kind to Ryunohige.
Job Gifts have increased our native double attack by 15%, and over time better multiattack gear has also put a large dampening on the Aftermath effect for which this weapon is known.
Not that it was a nail in the coffin either, but Fighter's Roll (as well as COR) is more common now than it used to be before Geomancer existed. In the end the lower base damage on the weapon after all of this is it's own undoing.
Augment Rank 15
Running with the big boys and the gil buyers.
Back to the bottom of the pile, old friend. The R15 update was not kind to Gungnir. Between Gungnir and Mjollnir are we really to believe the all father, god of death and wisdom, can't make a better ultimate weapon?
Gone is the accuracy bonus advantage as Aram snuck into Gungnir's house and ate it's lunch. Even Trishula has a large accuracy bonus now, and both weapons (especially Trishula) are significantly ahead of Gungnir.

Lets also take a moment to laugh at how puny a 5% DA bonus from AM is. Not only does Aram gain a large constant attack boost free from AM, but it has a 50% chance of follow up attack. So if you suddenly had 100% DA then you would still have another chance for yet another attack on top of that.
Speaking of, don't forget that the 16% chance for 2.5xs melee damage only applies to the first swing of a Gungnir. You can see how everything just comes together to hold the weapon back. What was once great has been picked away at by every other polearm.

But her emails! the jump bonus!? Woah, yeah, hold on, had to hold back my enthusiasm there for a moment. I suppose anything seems better than 5% DA.

On paper the defense down bonus is a better idea than in reality. The reality being that it has little practical use. Go ahead, disagree with me in the DRG thread, but really when is Gungnir's defense down ever seriously important outside of making up for poor planning?

The only real factor left is Geirskogul, and the need to go out of your way to make the most of this weapon. Even if that was putting out better numbers than Camlann's Torment, at least that skillchains with itself. This is not to say there is no niche left to scratch here, but you really need to go out of your way.

The final nail in the coffin for Gungnir is not how useful it may or may not be for DRG. It is the fact that for all the gil you are spending, you could have skipped all the trials and hassle to buy an Aram.
At ~200k per S. Astral Detritus it costs ~119m gil; on top of the cost for everything before that. Why the hell would 99% of players even bother making Gungnir in the face of that?

Remember when I bemoaned the lack of STR on Rhongomiant? Well, SE said "hold my beer" and tossed 20 on. What a swell bunch of guys. Isn't that right, Gungnir? Oh, wai-

At any rate, Trishula and Ryunohige both got the better end of the deal overall. So what was once said still applies. This weapon is no better than #2 now in bad situations without even considering SCs from Trishula, and even worse is it falls far into to #3 now in the best of situations.

Why? Well, Physical Damage Limit is why. Once you cap pDIF, our new trait as well as the Dragoon's Collar +2 sees the weaponskill damage from Rhongo fall far behind that of Stardiver with Trishula or Drakesbane with Ryunohige.

The best Rhongo offers up now is use for when you aren't capping attack, cap accuracy, but still just loses to Trishula anyway without SCs. So let's call this our struggle weapon! As in I struggle to see ever wanting it. It is still always better than Gungnir or Aram, but once again why even bother?
It just simply is not always about how things rank. In this case you'd need to compare obtaining a Mythic with obtaining an Empyrean. Only to then look at how less involved it is to obtain an Aeonic or obtain a stopgap weapon for a moment while you get your act together.

Float like a butterfly, and Stardiver like a bee. Trishula is the all around undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. You should always imagine it speaking to any detractors in a manner similar to that of Richard Sherman, Mohammed Ali, or Rick James.

Don't you ever try Trishula with those sorry polearms. It is so bad it makes medicine sick. It is one of the baddest motherparses of all time.

Well, well, well, look what the cat dragged in. From last to first, second, third, or even fourth. What a whacky ride for this weapon.

As you may know, all of these rankings include the right equipment and appropriate swaps. None of this means anything if you used each weapon with the same set. Each weapon was is simulated in various likely situations and with various buffs to test how things turn out.

Thanks to the Collar +2, PDL trait, newer crit equipment, and the huge boost from R15 Ryunohige gained. It may narrowly come out ahead of all options spamming Drakesbane with capped attack, the right gear, and Samurai Roll without Fighter's Roll. In which case we invoke the "SKILLCHAIN DAMAGE!!!11" as well as plain old "human error" clauses and all is right in the world again.
Ryuno then falls slightly behind Trishula again with Fighter's Roll which, if your CORs are as savy as pirate ought to be. Should be on in these situations anyway. Meaning only a poor choice in a capped situation sees Ryuno at #1.
It still feels good though, doesn't it? That is until you remember that SE keeps nerfing the effect of Frailty in newer content (Divergence, Odin, and some ambuscades, etc). Which means it is far less likely than it once was to take capping your attack for granted. Still, this weapon is about as solid as it gets if you put the most into it.

It is with the loss of capped attack, and thus the large gains from Physical Damage Limit+ as well as the attack penalty of Drakesbane (still the right choice for this over Stardiver) that we see a sharp decline back to #3/4. With even Aram (B) potentially overtaking it while Rhongo firmly steps into the #2 spot. That synopsis is all with Chaos/Sam roll on which is a standard for these situations and with how massively popular COR is now. So it is because all the aforementioned as well as the reminder that modern day multiattack gets in the way of the AM on this weapon where as it helps all the others.

Path B, there, your question has been answered and you may close the guide now.

As mentioned, this polearm is a solid performer over Gungnir and sometimes Ryunohige, but comes behind the rest. It cuts out all the hassle of trials and everything that comes along with that. Even better, you could argue it is somewhat free to upgrade.
While you can buy the upgrade items and finish instantly. With the level of content as there is at the top of the game. Why wouldn't you want to play with your DRG in Divergence just as a place to have fun while you upgrade the weapon/collar +2 and earn a little gil? Reinvest it in more heroism crystals and boom, you are actually playing FFXI for a change.
Which is somewhat of a crazy concept nowadays I suppose when faced with mercing/bottling gil or "use code NEWYEAR2030 FOR 5% OFF". Even worse, you might have to be a little bit patient, oh my, anything but that!

Armor

Haste Caps:
Magic: 43.75%
Equipment: 25%
Job Ability: 25%
JA Hastes:
Haste Samba: 5-10%
Hasso: 10%
Spirit Surge: 25%

Overall delay cap -80%

Common scenarios:

  • 1) Capped magical haste, Hasso (10% JA), and your wyvern (10% JA) at max paramaters you only need 17% in gear haste to cap delay.
  • With capped JA Haste (DNC or Spirit Surge) you only need 12% in haste gear to cap delay.
  • 2) Only 30% (Haste II) magical haste and capped JA delay allows you to cap delay with 25% gear haste.
  • Otherwise you probably aren't capping delay. See: Attack Speed.

The following sets assume capped haste.
Gearing DRG for Max DPS is not black and white as situationally several things may change the best sets. Certain weapons favor more STP than multi attack and vice versa. Frequently one piece of equipment may be the best and after changing another slot it no longer is. Corsair buffs alter the landscape significantly too.

Augments on the piece were run at the minimum value given in the range of augments, which I felt was more reasonable to obtain. If it has to be perfect to win then it won't be outside of a "Max" set.

Sets

TP Sets

All tiered sets are run through the spreadsheet as /SAM, capped accuracy and haste, -52% defense down on the mob, and with no attack buffs at all unless stated.

  • All rolls are on their lucky value.
  • The Stardiver tier was run as the WS set to the corresponding TP tier set.
  • Sometimes a slightly weaker choice was made due to assumed situational needs or the players position in the game at that point.
  • E.g. Windbuffet Belt +1 is sometimes ever so slightly better than Ioskeha Belt (NQ only) at capped haste and accuracy, but I assume players will make use of the acc/haste more.
TP sets abide with the following criteria:
  • Run against level 136 apex bats in the spreadsheet.
  • More temporary Alluvion pieces were run at lower or half value augments to determine if they are worth wasting time on
  • Run against level 136 apex bats in the spreadsheet.
  • Mid-buff: With +6 Geomancy EAed Frailty, Entrusted Fury, Dia II w/o Light Shot.
  • COR+Cap: With a lucky +5 Fighter's Roll, +5 Samurai Roll, +6 Geomancy EAed Frailty, Entrusted Fury, Dia II w/Light Shot, and standard Honor March/Minuet V. So, basically right near a constant cap with average buffs.
  • Geirrothr was chosen to be the spreadsheet weapon for the max tier because of it's grindable obtainment over that of REAM weapons. They get their own section
  • Overall I wouldn't recommend obsessing over STP for x-hit builds. Best in slot pieces of gear are often still the best even if they break your build.
  • Stardiver benefits from TP overflow and DRG has a 26% chance of Conserve TP procing on a WS which distorts the value of STP as well.
Somewhere around as close as 80% of your overall damage is in your weaponskills, and sometimes boosting your WS damage over maintaining a build is more beneficial. This is what spreadsheeting guestimating is for.
For high end min/maxing everything is in flux based on your situation, buffs, weapon, and the opponent. There is no definitive best answer here, but you can get best guesses by spreadsheeting and simulating the gauntlet.

  • For Valorous Hose, STP +7 < DA +4 < STP +8 < DA +5
  • Valorous Mail must have at least +7 STP on it, otherwise use the Plackart +1.

Yeah, no change from the capped set, but perhaps in time again there will be.

  • Read the max-tier note!
  • Valorous Hose with STP+8 are right there with DA+5. Just save a spot and go for STP +8.
  • Valorous Mail STP+8 or DA+5 if you lack the body. Then again why would you if you have the polearm?

Ultimate Weapon TP Sets

Unlike the max tier, these are run with great, but not perfect augments.

  • Spreadsheeted with the max tier Stardiver sets.
  • I just felt this is more overall realistic to gear for and better covers an all purpose usage. Samurai Roll and/or Fighter's Roll really changes the landscape a bit for the values of certain pieces of armor.
  • Max-buffs:Toss Bolster, Soul Voice, +5 XI Samurai, and Fighter's rolls on top of the Mid-buffs.

TP Accuracy Sets

  • Based these against WoC with defense -52%, chaos roll +5, entrusted fury, honor/mad and capped accuracy buffs.
    • Basically I capped accuracy with buffs then worked backwards to try and puzzle in which pieces were the least DPS losses while gaining accuracy.
      • This was done exclusively with Trishula from it's base set.
      • Each set has less DPS, but more acc than the last.
        • I expect these sets to be imperfect due to jigsaw puzzle that is creating them. Keep in mind different polearms will make use of slightly different sets.
      • Basically other guides just cover options for accuracy, and I wanted to make some actual sets, but I can't (won't!) sit here making them for every polearm.
      • I also didn't go nuts with valorous augments unlike in the other TP sets unless these pieces were aforementioned.
  • DRG has had mostly shitty options for the ammo slot compared to other jobs, for over 15 years now. Amazing, isn't it?

  • This may seem low to gain, but if your hit rate is about 81%+ then this will cap your accuracy, and raise your DPS with barely a dent in your max DPS.
  • I would say this most commonly addresses acc needs after food.
  • Keep in mind your stardiver acc too, and don't forget to count +20 from the fotia pieces.
  • Flamma Dirs +2 (If you lack Ptero. Brais +3) are an option depending on your Valorous accuracy augs being crap or not.
  • The gains here really depend on your valorous acc+ augments.
  • You shouldn't need to really go past this 99% of the time.

  • Basically you should just find a better buffer instead.
  • This set is the same with or without Trishula.
  • There is a little more wiggle room as some choices were made for DPS.

Jump Sets

General Note: As long as you use the main Jump+ pieces listed in these sets then simply using the rest of your TP gear is fine, and the correct move.

  • You are picking up peanuts here outside of Jump specific pieces. Changing suboptimal pieces for optimal ones results in about 0.5-4 DPS a piece.
  • STP is generally more important for jump than multiattack is. Your DPS matters more than your Jump damage essentially.

Ptero. Mail +3 icon.png Ptero Mail +3:

  • Wins easily for Jump/High Jump.
  • Very close win/loss for Spirit Jump, and narrowly loses when you gain both Samurai's and Fighter's rolls.
  • If your DRG is not geared very well, Ptero Mail +3 should likely still narrowly win for Spirit Jump. So just keep it.
  • Never wins (within reason) for Soul Jump.

  Max Tier (Atk Cap)
  • Moonshade Earring is not optional. It is one of the single largest boosts to your Stardivers at any tier.
Note: These Stardiver accuracy sets are compared to the Max Tier (Uncapped Atk) Stardiver.
This is because it is more likely to need attack if you need accuracy. Tell your buffers to get good.

  Max Tier (Uncapped)
  • Dagon Breastplate (if you have it) is worth using over Valorous unless it is ~perfect on accuracy due to it having 5 extra dex; almost 4 accuracy for +49 on the body.
  • Vishap Greaves +3 gives up the least out of the 5 pieces to throw on and activate the set bonus with regal ring.
  • Vishap hands +3 would be the next step then basically full vishap +3 after that.
  • After it gets to the "how close have we dropped down near Gungnir territory next.
  • It takes a lot to really get so bad that you need Gungnir.
  • Lust. Cap +1 (A) < Ptero +2 < Gavialis Latent < Ptero +3
  • Ptero Mail +3 is right there with Dagon Breastplate, and will beat it narrowly if you are severely attack starved.
  • Ptero Greaves +3 for accuracy needs, otherwise Sulevia Leggings +2.

Note: The Gavialis Helm icon.png Gavialis HelmGavialis Helm description.png is the superior option in nearly every single set as a head piece for Stardiver during the applicable days. Essentially it is like wearing a more powerful Elemental / Fotia Belt with stats on your head.
  • The exceptions being if you require accuracy or you are not capping attack and have the Ptero. Armet +3 (+2 is still weaker).

These days are earthsday, lightsday, and darksday.

During Trishula aftermath this helm does not extend to watersday and iceday.

  Max Tier (Atk Cap)
  • You may skip the Lustratio Cap and just use Flamma Zucchetto +1 if you want since it is expendable.
  • Sulevia's Gauntlets +2 beat Flamma Gauntlets +1 in every situation while Flamma +1 should win at attack cap over Sulevia +1.
  • Your Valorous Body needs to be well augmented in order to beat Flamma Korazin +2
  • You should likely just use that instead of making an extra body.
  • Valorous Mask with great tauped STR, acc/atk, and DA augments is still better than Flamma +2 without +2 hands also being used. Otherwise Lustratio Cap +1 (A), otherwi~se Valorous Mask with taupe STR/DA.
  • Regal Ring should beat Begrudging on real content when attack isn't capped.
  • Hjarrandi > Dagon > Valorous STR/Crit Dmg
  • If you aren't capping Attack, Ptero Armet +3 is better than Flamma, rest stays the same.

  • If you are SCing, this gear reigns supreme.
  • A proper Allies' Roll should be granting you at least 19-21% SC Bonus (50% cap).

  • If you have the Ptero. Armet +2 then you are capped on nonaugment breath+ for any set.
  • Keep in mind that breath+ augments are counted separately from the breath+ equipment caps.
  • Is this set worth it? Yes, because the wyvern breath goes off with this gear while you are under JA delay.
  • This means you can deal over 1,000 damage in unresisted breaths with this set which is free damage.
  • The gains are several hundred damage over wearing little to nothing. Which is more than going after certain DD gear pieces will get you.
  • The Dragoon's Earring is only ~5 Macc, so feel free to skip it unless you want to save pennies on Angons.
  • Remember, Steady Wing is 30% of the wyvern's max HP so this gear will add a significant value to the stoneskin.
  • Spirit Surge is 25% of the wyvern's max HP for the boost, so just use this set with the Pteroslaver Mail.
  • Note: Neither Steady Wing, nor Spirit Surge accounts for a quick macro in then out of gear. See this post.

Toss on a Tempus Fugit if you are not capping magical haste. Having both Hjarrandi pieces this puts you in a tough spot in justifying a hybrid set.
Hybrid DT used to be a large DPS pickup at the cost of DT.
Now, Hjarrandi are good in general to the point where capping DT with a Tempus Fugit to make up the gear haste difference (if needed). Will be close enough to the point where the alternative is making a hybrid set with less DT for only a minor DPS boost.
Even then the whole DT vs Hybrid thing is on it's head.
TL;DR: I would just stick to using Hjarrandi with a Fugit and tossing your ammo/ring back on.

  73% FC
  • Just to toss on while taking a serious TP move.
  • This set may seem a bit wonky, but tries to balance damage taken to you as well as the wyvern.
  • If you lack the Tartarus Platemail, then a +1 tathlum will just about cap you still with a Chozoron Coselete, otherwise be undercapped.
  • Don't underestimate the value of this set for resisting additional effects or magic damage.
  • With Shell V on you only need ~ 26% MDT.
  • There are better magic evasion pieces to fill slots with, but you know which those are, and this set doesn't give up completely on offense.
  • I also assume you can create an MDT with no Shell set on your own :P
  • Cap is 80%, you will need to sub /RDM to cap FC. In which case /RDM grants +15%.
More or less this is for Trust summons and healing breath /blu. Other niche uses.
