Announced as part of a press conference, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel is the final main storyline mission scenario aimed towards improving user satisfaction under changing market conditions. Below is a quote from Square-Enix's conference digest.

Rhapsodies of Vana'diel promotional artwork.
This scenario will serve to tie together fourteen years of FINAL FANTASY XI,
and we aim for it serve as the ultimate compilation of all we have accomplished
to date, with major characters from throughout the game's history making
appearances--a feat that only a game as storied as FINAL FANTASY XI can offer.
The scenario will consist of three separate chapters, debuting in the May,
August, and November version updates, respectively.
Coming along with the scenario are exciting new battle content, never-before-seen
rewards, and a variety of other additions to engage players of all different stripes.
We plan for this to be a grand conclusion to the FINAL FANTASY series' first MMORPG--and
indeed, the first console MMORPG--in a way that will be recorded in the annals of
the genre's history.
FINAL FANTASY XI's major version updates will conclude with the implementation of
the final chapter of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, but there will continue to be minor
version updates that address bugs and contain various balance adjustments.
Further, PlayStation®2 and Xbox 360® service will cease in March 2016. We would like
to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have enjoyed FINAL FANTASY XI on
these platforms and to those who have assisted us in bringing Vana'diel to you.
Going forward, the team will renew its focus on providing an enjoyable
FINAL FANTASY XI experience on the Windows platform.

Prologue

A maiden appears in the dreams of the chosen, descending from the crystal, whispering, "I must find my master..." We remained blissfully ignorant of how her countenance portended a violent struggle over the fate of Vana'diel itself.

Key Features

The main focus of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel content is to allow adventurers to enjoy all content that Final Fantasy XI has to offer without the need for as many adventurer companions as previously required. Rhapsody Reward Key Items have been introduced to allow adventurers to easily enjoy the game without as much of a grind as before. Curio Vendor Moogles have also been added who supply various goods that will assist adventurers in their day to day activities. The more reward Rhapsody Reward Key Items you possess, the more goods the moogles will sell!

In order to enjoy the story line in Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, registration of previous expansion packs is required as well as progression up to certain points in each of their missions.

Rhapsodies of Vana'diel has introduced many Key Items rewards that grant the bearer massive bonuses that have never been seen before. These Key Items are obtained by progressing through the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel Mission Storyline. Some examples of the effects that can be obtained are massive Experience Points and Capacity Point bonuses, unbelievable reduction in content timer restrictions such as Dynamis, Salvage, and Limbus, as well as Trust Magic bonuses allowing the bearer to summon up to five alter egos at a time! Be sure to see the Rhapsody Reward Key Items

The ultimate reward for completing all of the Rhapsodies of Vana'diel Missions is the ability to start the Aeonic Weapons questline, as well as upgrade Artifact Armor +1 to its +2 and +3 equivalent.
