History

Cadence DeCambre was born into a somewhat wealthy family on the isle of Tavnazia shortly before the Great War. As a child she was fascinated with her mother's work as a White Mage and often accompanied her to the homes of Tavnazia's richest nobles to cure their ailments. On her 4th birthday, the Marquisate was attacked by the hoardes of Orcs and Behemoth. Cadence was rushed underground into the catacombs along with her mother who had been gravely wounded by an Orc's weapon. Temperance fell to her wounds before the exit to the Lufaise Meadows. Cadence sat with her, cradling her fallen body before a survivor search party found her and escorted her to safety. Cadence left a white flower on her mother's body as she left.

After being taken to a sanctuary in the San d'Orian cathedral, Cadence grew up under the strict training of Narcheral in the art of White Magic. After mastering reviving magic, she soon grew distant from her mentor, and at the age of 16 began to study Black Magic from books and scrolls she found in the cathedral's basement. Although, learning both these magic techniques at the same time, she was named as an honorary Red Mage by Rainemard, who sadly died soon after.

Cadence, then 19, began to grow weary of San d'Orian traditions and being frowned upon by the cathedral, she packed her few belongings and embarked on a journey into the world of Vana'diel. She trekked across La Theine and the dunes of Valkurm til she reached a small town named Selbina by the ocean, it was there that she learned of the horrific reality of what happened in Tavnazia a few years before, and what had happened to the Marquisate.

She then boarded a cargo ship bound for the Mindartia continent, on the long journey she put a lot of thought into her next actions, where she would travel and what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. Once she arrived in the ferry town of Mhaura, she travelled south towards the Sarutabaruta region. Once arriving, she set up home in the Windurst Waters district, and regularly attended the Aurastery to improve her skills in using magic. At the age of 21 she recieved an award for exemplary performance in both white and black magic. She became an aide to Professor Shantotto who became her mentor in the black magic arts and often travelled with her to foreign cities and towns such as Bastok and Kazham. One day she was approached by Shantotto and was offered a position at the Opistery, where she worked tidying the magic books. She found a book detailing another form of magic that she had not known about previously, Summoning. The next few days she searched Windurst for more information, but was warned that summoning magic was highly forbidden, and that the protocrystals had been sapped of their power. Undeterred, Cadence still researched summoning magic, and learned about all the different avatars of Vana'diel.

One night, she was locking the Opistery doors when she heard a noise inside, she edged her way into the building and from the bookcase she saw a gleaming blue light, that appeared to be coming from inside a book she had not read, the book was entitled "I can hear a rainbow" by Karuha Baruha. She picked the book off the shelf and it levitated from her hand, landing open on the floor, where the glowing subsided. Suddenly she was greeted by the avatar Carbuncle. Carbuncle informed her that the protocrystals can supply energy to those who are skilled at wielding it, and that she was worthy of harnessing this power. Carbuncle's warning rang clear "Only call upon us when completely necassary Cadence".

After being greeted by Carbuncle, Cadence left yet again on another journey, this time to the Duchy of Jeuno in the north west. On her journey she met a small group of adventurers, and travelled with them along the dangerous roads to Jeuno. Once arriving, they all went their separate ways, and Cadence started to work for the Merry Minstrel tavern. One cold day in winter, she was moving the snow from the door when she found a man laying injured while many citizens and adventurers simply passed by him. Worried for the man's safety, she walked over and offered assistance, using her white magic she brought him back to consiousness. She offered him a meal inside the tavern, and he gladly accepted. While he ate, Cadence listened to his tales of battling and adventuring, and before she realised, the tavern had closed for the night! He asked if she would like to hear any more stories, and she eagerly nodded.

Every day from that night, the man came to the tavern and told Cadence his stories, until one day a messenger came to the tavern and informed Cadence that the man had been killed by Orcs in battle. Depressed, Cadence began to write poetry, and wandered the streets of Jeuno playing her piece "Requiem for a Stranger" for anybody who would listen.

On her 23rd birthday she set out once again, this time to the Empire of Aht Urhgan, after learning that the Empire had come out of seclusion and was allowing adventurers from the mainland to journey there. Once learning of a group of mercenaries after arriving, she searched Aht Urhgan until she found them. Calling themselves The Order of the Blue Gartr, she requested to join them.
