Guides I will be referencing: Fresh 99, Fantastic EXP's, and Signet.

I'm creating this guide to hold the hands of new or returning players as they venture back into the game at fresh Lvl.1 status. This guide will contain the solutions to little quirks and not so intuitive mechanisms the game throws at you that have you scratching your head and endlessly cycling through guides to find the one detail you may have missed.

I will do my best to keep it short and concise.

This guide will assume you've already read through Returning_to_Vana'diel. It's a fantastic guide that explains the current state of affairs and exquisitely outlines each encounter in immense detail. A later guide will be created to help with going from fresh 119 to Omen content.

Creating a Character

Race mattered once, but it doesn't so much anymore. Pre-99 your trust NPC's will rush mobs down so quickly it won't matter; Once you attain 99 and start gearing into 119 everything will balance out for race to not make a difference.

Server is very important because population has seen a significant decline in comparison to where the game was in 2003. If we go off FFXIAH and sort by active, we can see Asura at the top with 10,000+, however I can tell you first hand as of 10/11/2017 Asura has been at a steady 1600 during the morning, afternoon, and evening by CST. While I don't have exact data with proof to back, if reddit is to be believed then we can safely say Asura or Odin server is where you want to be for high population. [1]

Starting nation is your personal preference, although let it be noted if you pick a nation that coincides with the racial lore you'll receive special newbie rings(Note: You can also purchase these with a currency called Conquest Points later on):

About

Race

Additional

If you start with the races listed in the nation's row you'll receive your ring for free.

Sand O'ria

Sovereign government style with a royal family. Lots of French words and names here, and the overall air is somewhat condescending (especially to other races). Very blue blood, medieval society. Home nation to the Elvaan. Prides itself on it's knights, paladins, dragoons, and red mages.

Elvaan

San d'Orian Ring Purchase for 4,000 Conquest Points at Rank 3 in San d O'ria.

Bastok

A republic governed by a trusted cabinet and President. Takes pride in it's industry and mining facility, brags to be the richest nation. Cid Highwind resides here. Home nation to the Humes. Galka immigrated here, work the mines and are generally treated like mules with a special sub-section for their own housing that demonstrates their blue collar, poverty stricken status.

Hume & Galka

Bastokan Ring Purchased for 4,000 Conquest Points at Rank 3 in Bastok.

Windurst

A federation with government revolving around the five Ministries of Magic. Home of the scholarly taru-taru who pride themselves on their expert knowledge of magics. Shantotto resides here. Unlike the relationship between Hume & Galka in Bastok, the Taru and Mithra have a mutual respect for one another despite Mithra originating elsewhere. This has dubbed Windurst a nation of "peace".

Controls

Let's jump right in: Make sure numlock is on, go ahead and open your menu by pressing the minus sign (-) on your numpad.

Tip: Directional keys ( ← ↑ ↓ → ) to navigation the menu.

Click right to change over to an extended menu. Close to the bottom you'll see "Config". Inside Config you'll find: Gameplay, Chat Filters, Font Colors, Windows, Misc, Misc 2, Effects, Mouse/Cam, and Global.

Most annoying settings you'll want to change instantly are Global (Language Filter: OFF, Auto-Disconnect: OFF), Gameplay (Inventory Sort: AUTO), and Misc (On-Screen damage display: BOTH). If you want to mess with your window color make a brief visit to Window.

CTRL + E opens your equipment.
CTRL + I opens your inventory.
Map is opened from your menu, very last option. No shortcut for this one.

Records of Eminence (RoE)

Right out the gate you're going to start up Records of Eminence. Don't get overwhelmed by that page yet, I'll explain it as we go.

Open your menu as described in the section above, click right to the extended menu and select "Quests" which is the second option from the very top. Navigate as follows: Objective List → Tutorial → First Step Forward.
