Floppyseconds' Tannery - Leathercrafting Guide by Spicyryan

Time to tan that hide ass!

I built this with a mindset of farming and synthing rather than buying all the materials. That is not to say you just shouldn't buy some materials, but Leathercraft in particular is based on farming more than other crafts. This can just as easily be speed leveled through your wallet though.
Overall, I just took common sense synths and attempted to limit any synth from going 5 above a level. Synths can cap 11 levels above their natural cap, but slows down the higher above it you go.

There have been many guides on crafting for years, but I wanted to take it to the next level with internal resources of the wiki here like the synthesis tables. Icons and other resources available from the wiki do this, but every synth is noted as to whether you sell it or hold it for later. Finally, each item I reccomend farming includes a zone or two of which I recommend and generally a drop rate based researching the ffxidb database.

Welcome to the next level of crafting guides, enjoy :D

Skillup Rates

First off Directions, moonphases, etc have no effect on crafting. SE confirmed this was the long suspected case despite people making guides and complex charts and pictures on the subject. I never liked superstitious bastards anyway.

That being said here is what you need to know about the rates of skillups.

  • Until level 70 you will skill up at about a 95% rate according to our Crafting page.
  • Synths can cap up to 11 levels above their natural cap.
    • However, the rates slow down and steadily decrease the higher above the cap you go.
  • You can not skill up on a break if a synth cap is greater than 5 levels from your skill.
  • Synthesis support does not increase the rate of skillups, but does help you break less if you are below cap.
  • Before factoring in any rings or other benefits you have a 5% chance of breaking your synth at or above the cap of the item.
  • You can increase your skill up rates with Monster Rearing momentos, Ionis while in Adoulin, and the Orvail Ring.
    • Benefits from food and items are multiplicative and not additive.
  • All of these items are listed below.

Synths

It puts the tea leaves and water on the skins or else it gets the hose again.

I would recommend not only having ample storage as you will be holding on to mats inbetween synths, but stockpiling any hides you will need in the future. Namely Griffon Hides, but if you are interested in starting leathercraft then stock up on Behemoth Hides from either your own endeavors or riding your friend's coattails.

  • Rabbit hides are 80 gil from Cletae and you can pick up a grass thread from Windurst Woods at the CC guild or on the AH.

  • Once again, the skins are very easy to farm as multiple drop at a time from a kill in the Crawler's Nest.

Main Craft: Leathercraft - (21)

  • The easiest place to farm the hides at is either Buburimu Peninsula or Eastern Altepa Desert they should drop roughly a fourth of the time in those zones with some TH. Honestly after 20 minutes of farming Dhalmels I just stuck with the Cesti to 21.
The leather itself is used for a Gobbie Bag item, so it will sell slowly over time for a decent profit margin.

This is another Gobbie Bag item which means you get to take forever selling it!
If you are hurting for space you can sell it, and for a third option you can keep the leathers and use what doesn't sell for some Bugard Strapons later. It caps at 63, two levels higher than Tiger Leather. Overall, this lets you skip super shitty Dhalmel Mantles for skill ups.

  • Now it is time to burn up those Sheep Leathers you made. Hurray for momentary inventory clearance until the next item.
Parchment sells well enough due to its use as a pop item for Ark Angels in Escha and for various quests and synths.

  • Farm the hides in Abyssea - La Theine near conflux #8. If you really don't want to farm in Abyssea then Mosshorns in the mire work for AFK farming.

  • This synth sort of sucks. You may obtain wool thread from Gibol at the CC guild if you have/know someone with clothcrafting 28+ for 33.6k a stack.
You can weigh how annoying the wool thread is against doing Raptor Straps with the prospect of farming twice as many raptor skins at a much lower rate on the next synth or more logically, buying them.

  • Farm raptors in Sauromugue Champaign (S). The ones in Abyssea - Misareaux drop terribly. In fact they all drop pretty bad. I would skip this with Waistbelts, Ram Mantles, and Catoblepas Leather unless you happen to come into a bunch of skins or they are reasonable enough off the AH.

Main Craft: Leathercraft - (58)

  • Cletae sells the hides for 30k a stack from the guild or you may farm them for ~19% drop rate with some TH in Bibiki Bay from Catoblepas and the higher level Camelopard. Both drop at the same rate.
This may seem like a silly synth, but it is not as bad as Ram Mantles, and it is a higher synth which lets you move on with your life. Overall, there aren't any great alternatives.

Neither are used for any future synths besides the fact each makes a ring (just add a wind crystal!) that caps one level about the leathers if you want to level up off that since you made the stuff.
Tiger leather is rather valuable on the AH, and other crafts use it to make some synths, including cursed gear, but it doesn't move as fast as you might think considering how much of it you will have to sell. Smilodon Leather, like Tiger Leather is also used in a Gobbie Bag and has selling potential.
Personally I just did smilodons and moved on.

  • Here is what you do with your excess leathers in order to skill up further. Skills being slowing post 70, so plan accordingly.

Main Craft: Leathercraft - (70)

  • Not getting the Defending Ring never felt so good, until now. The hides and leather are a expensive as the leather is used to spawn all T1 Reisenjima NMs. This would be fine if you were just buying to sell the leathers as that would be an amply supplied profit to and from the AH, but this item makes the Dynamic Belt synthed later so plan accordingly before selling.
The only easy way around using this leather later would be making even more Aetosaur Gloves or something like Sealord Leather or 105 grips instead because no one really wants to be stuck making Panther Masks unless the materials are actually stocked in the AH (or you horde them) in which case that would be a way around using this leather too. So then you can buy hides, craft, and sell leathers at will.

Lynx Hides are ~50% drop rate from the 18 War Lynx in the very most north east section of Meriphataud Mountains (S) and the leather can be slowly sold as it is used in a Gobbie Bag. Watch the market though obviously, but I would probably mix and match on this one depending on how you feel and what is available.
Personally I did coeurl leather for the cestis next.

  • This leather has no real uses so just NPC it for some profit, 1k per leather. It makes a nice alternative synth, but you can skip it entirely.
Farm the skins in the Labyrinth of Onzozo at an about 30% rate with some TH.

  • If you made Coeurl Leather then go for this. It is a nice way to dump it off, 2k per cesti.

Main Craft: Leathercraft - (76)

  • Hides drop at about a 50% rate in Abyssea - Uleguerand near conflux #7. Which is half the reason for suggesting this, but it can be skipped completely.
This isn't as amazing as it could be due to the fact imperial tea leaves cost so much, and the demand for Marid Leather is down due to salvage armor being irrelevant. However, if you know someone who has a Karakul in their mog garden then they can buy these leaves for 47.6k. That or you can grab them for 2-3 times as much of off the AH from people who do! Overall it is an alternative option to level up on.

  • Raaz hides are about a 50%+ drop rate in Kamihr Drifts. That is good considering the Raaz are spread across the map and a higher level. The other bad news is that this these leathers are used to reach 110. You will need tons of them.

  • You can buy these from the Ah and sell them back or keep them for some cursed synths. The hides are easier to farm during Voidwatch campaigns, but they are a low rate regardless. You can still work on an empyrean weapon while doing that though if you are the slow and steady type. Or you can just make those Aetosaur Gloves to 110!

  • Fins are cheap on the AH anymore, so if you pick up any Behemoth Hides or anyone gives them to you then you are set. There are 3 other 105 grips, but they aren't as easy as this one,
  • Time to turn that 2

This uses twice as many leathers as the gloves, but if you are a higher level then your skillups are slowing from that so perhaps you'd like to change to this.
