Skillup Rates

First off Directions, moonphases, etc have no effect on crafting. SE confirmed this was the long suspected case despite people making guides and complex charts and pictures on the subject. I never liked superstitious bastards anyway.

That being said here is what you need to know about the rates of skillups.

  • Until level 70 you will skill up at about a 95% rate according to our Crafting page.
  • Synths can cap up to 11 levels above their natural cap.
    • However, the rates slow down and steadily decrease the higher above the cap you go.
  • You can not skill up on a break if a synth cap is greater than 5 levels from your skill.
  • Synthesis support does not increase the rate of skillups, but does help you break less if you are below cap.
  • Before factoring in any rings or other benefits you have a 5% chance of breaking your synth at or above the cap of the item.
  • You can increase your skill up rates with Monster Rearing momentos, Ionis while in Adoulin, the Orvail Ring, and other equipment.
    • Benefits from food and items are multiplicative and not additive.
    • All of these items are listed below.

  • This is the first time you will be inconvenienced by the guild and it's low inventory. Which is also why I made a note to start buying the cotton ahead of the time.
Purchase this from Kuzah Hpirohpon in Windurst and Taten-Bilten in Al Zahbi. It is not sold by the guild vendor in Selbina. Meriri and her Selbina counterpart sell the cotton for 500g, but that means you are making basic threads here for 20k a stack instead of 2k a stack when the guild is at the lowest price.
You may farm this at an ~18% drop rate with some TH on mandragora in Buburimu Peninsula or Tahrongi Canyon, but that is a pretty big waste of time IMO.
If I couldn't get the cottons from the guild, say during a crafting campaign. Then I would just buy grass thread to make more cloth and capes then move into red grass and buy cotton thread from the guild later on.

  • Purchase sheep wool for 187g from Tilala in Selbina. It becomes much more expensive from the other guild vendors at 675g a pop. Cletae in the Leathercraft guild sells hides for 100g a pop to make wool, but that isn't a cloth synth. If you are feeling cheap then you could do that.
That's right, no Wool Cloth in this guide! While it is used for a Gobbiebag, velvet cloth is more important (endgame synths), valuable, and moves faster. Besides your AH is still trying to sell those Linen Cloths from earlier. You will be able to sell stacks of velvet where as wool is only in singles despite both being Gobbiebag items.
That is what drove me to remove wool cloth. Make seven for three of your future test items though!
Just to be the devils advocate that I am though. You may do whatever you want as Cotton Threads are so cheap to buy (cotton and wool both separate can make velvet) at 2k a stack from the guild that you could just burn these into cloth.
After leveling leather and having endless stacks of items to sell as singles I asked myself "Why? Then decided something isn't worth anything if I can't sell it because I have too much of it.

  • These are generally plentiful on the AH. If you feel frisky though, you can farm them from Frigatebirds in Abyssea - Misareaux at ~40% with some TH. There is still another better option though.

  • Cheaper, easier, but less stackable and the guild closes. Hence why bird fletchings is also listed.
On a side note who would ever wear something this ugly? It looks like something Willie Nelson shit out in the White House bathroom.

  • While you may think making wool threads and not doing cloth is breaking the rules of convention. Then wait till you find out there is no Silk Cloth! In fact there is only one more time in the next 60 levels that I recommend will make thread or cloth again!
Kuzah Hpirohpon in Windurst and Tilala in Selbina will sell these with varying stock from 7.1k a stack at the lowest price.
If you want to stick it to the man here, then you can farm Silk Thread at about a 20% rate from Champion Crawlers around (F-8) Rolanberry Fields (S) with some TH.
Why mention this if the AH has plenty and the guild can sell them cheap you ask? Aside from obvious contingencies (hey those crafting campaigns get a little out of control!), they also drop Wyrdstrand at about a 10% rate (with TH!) which you can use later for your last test item and to skill up in general.
Keep two for the 58 test item.

  • Here is where your paths diverge. You can either make silk and green ribbons which is the fastest way providing you can get the materials from the vendor. The other route being making a bunch of fletchings provided you can get the insect wings or easily farm the gnat wings forever. The fact that skill ups rates drop off after 60 means you might just end up doing both unless there is a skill up campaign going on. At least this is optional nowadays, back in the day it wasn't at all.
Anyway, purchase cocoons from the guilds when you can, and synth it up. You probably shouldn't start synthing your threads into cloth until 59+.

Main Craft: Clothcraft - (52)

  • Here is the best synth ever pretty much, but it conflicts with silk for ribbons later IF you want to go that route. The wings are super cheap, and always on the AH from new players. Feel free to make these along with your silk if you choose to, but plan which route you wish to take; farming for fletchings or silk road.
If there were none on the AH then you could get them at a ridiculously high rate (80%+ without TH) from beetles in the Crawlers' Nest.

  • Popular item for various purposes such a reforged AF armor. You can make some money selling these for singles. You can nail two birds with one stone here. Personally I had no leathercrafting, and the guild was being bought out of sheeps wool. So I crafted a ton of it and went up to 14 Leathercraft.
Why mention this? Well Karakul Threads are 2,700 per from the guild at minimum cost. And only the one in Al Zahbi sells it. This means it is very prone to being bought out at times. Karakul Wool is a level 14 leather synth, and hides cost 600 gil a pop. This means threads will cost you 2,400 per thread if you blow your time making these, but you can gain some leather skillups for free doing it this way.
If you do go this route for some leather skills. Then you can make the threads (55 synth) into 61 or so. Then the cloth a little further which means giving the finger to Green Ribbons and Gnats. Single silk cloth are worth much more than 2k to the NPC like the ribbons are anyway, even if you need the AH space. Frankly I find this to be a good synth due to the reliable demand over the last 10 years for it.
You are crafting in Adoulin with Ionis still, right?

  • If you want to do these instead of Ribbons you can farm the gnats in Abyssea - Attohwa at about a 40% drop rate. Ribbons would be faster though.

  • Ribbons NPC for about 2k. So at minimum guild cost (if you can find it) then your silk cloth will cost near that resale price. Alternatively you can also spindle together some cocoons and fire out a lot of threads. Otherwise the AH price for the cloth costs too damn much.

  • You can farm these at about a 50% drop rate in Marjami Ravine near #1. However, there are only a few there, but they respawn in ~3 minutes. The main point of this spot is to also farm Tulfaire Feathers for later. Guess I burned that two birds one stone line a bit early huh?
You also won't have any issues with traditional apkallu hate in marjami like with ToAU apkallus.
If you are only heading to 70, or read ahead a bit and want to do rainbow capes to power craft instead of Tulfaires or perhaps you just want to mix and match. Then I would absolutely head to Abyssea - Misareaux #00. Where there are as many birds as you will ever need.
In 35 minutes of aggroing, linking, and AoE killing the mobs on BLU/THF with TH4 (/thf and +2 in gear) I was able to pull out 5 stacks of feathers and 2 stacks of spider webs running back and forth like mad between the spiders and Waddles McDawdles (best way to describe those slow birds) apkallus. So if you want to watch netflix for an hour you can make out like a bandit.

  • This is a synth you can blow gil on to speed level, but the only issue is that the feathers (sold at the chocobo stable) are only available to the first place nation in the conquest, and you must be a citizen of that nation.
Hopefully you have a mule or a friend aligned to the nation in first. If all else fails, see the Immigration NPC.

The old synth used to be Wamoura Silk from the Al Zahbi guild back when it was really popular for salvage gear and things. Now it has a few niche uses as Wamoura Cloth doesn't sell for much or fast on the AH for that matter.
Meaning you are going to be slow moving from here on out. It becomes a matter of farming mats really. Cheap and easy compared to any other synth, but you already know how to power craft yourself up (Wamoura Silk and cloth, duh) if you are impatient.

  • Can skip these or use them briefly as a bridge and just ride the newer Mixed Fletchings recipe below.
Porxies in Reisenjima drop their wings at about a 17% rate, and you can AoE burn/CP pt on them. Honestly, I would just skip this synth for Mixed Fletchings.
Porxies used to be the only game in town, but those days are over.
