What Pankration Is

Pankration is an arena battle system, pitting players' monsters vs each other in one on one fights. Each fight rewards jettons to those participating, and EXP to the monsters fighting.

Where can I find Pankration?

Well, thats a good question! Pankration is held in The Pit, which you can find in Aht Urhgan Whitegate as part of The Colosseum (you enter at the door labeled "The Pit" at J-11 in Aht Urhgan Whitegate; you will zone into battle cage area Annihilation). Here you will find four battle cages: Three cages hold exhibition battles for which players register, the last is a tournament cage where challengers take on the reigning champion.

How much does Pankration cost to participate?

Jettons are the currency used to participate in Pankration. When just starting out, the easiest way to obtain Jettons is trading Imperial currency.

Participation in Pankration

To participate in Pankration, you will need a monster of your own. How do you get said monster? You will need to purchase a Soultrapper and Blank Soul Plates to take "pictures" of various monsters around Vana'diel. You can buy both of these items from Zandjarl in The Pit area. There are two levels of Soultrappers and Soul Plates: The high speed plates record the images faster than the regular blank plates, and the Soultrapper 2000 has more uses on it than the regular Soultrapper. At this time, it is not confirmed that the higher priced items have a higher success rate at capturing images, nor any bearing on what stats you may capture from the monster.

2 Jettons:

500 Jettons:

There are also four items which will help your capture rate, all of which are various Aht Urhgan Beastmen-type hoods. These cost 5000 Jettons each.

After you have bought both a Soultrapper and Blank Soul Plates, you must choose what kind of monsters you would like to capture. Some monsters cannot be used in Pankration for fighting, such as Beastmen, but you can still capture stats for upgrading your fighter.

Once you know what you want, you need to go take some "pictures" of it with your Soultrapper. For the most part, the closer you are to the mob, the better the chance of getting a picture recorded. It is also helpful if the mob does not move while taking the picture.

Remember:

  • Some monsters’ images cannot be recorded.
  • It is possible to capture the image of monsters claimed by other PCs.

So I have some plates... now what?

Once you have gotten a desired capture, you can head back to The Pit or The Colosseum and talk to one of these NPCs:

Trade an Ice Crystal and the plate you want to change into a fighter to one of these NPCs. They will charge you one Jetton to create a Soul Reflector.

After receiving a Soul Reflector, trade it to one of the following NPCs so that it can be "checked" and made into an Official Reflector.

After you have an Official Reflector, you can trade it to Abhrem, Idjayham, Biwhal, or Whashai to name your Pit Monster.

  • You cannot name your monster while it is registered and waiting to fight.

How do I register to fight?

Trade your Official Reflector to one of the following NPCs:

Be careful, the registrar may drop your application in a puddle!

You will be signed up to fight vs. another player's monster; regardless of winning or losing your monster will gain some EXP, depending on the level of your opponent's Pit Monster.

The Match

After being paged, participants can proceed to one of the cage officials to be allowed onto a platform where they will be able to give simple orders to their monsters via a system of speaking tubes. Adventurers whose monsters are not currently participating in a match can take in all the excitement of the other matches from an elevated stage in front of each battle cage.

After the match, don't forget to confirm your results.

  • Draws
If both monsters are still standing at the end of 3 minutes, the match will be declared a draw. In this case, the experience point and Jetton reward will be split evenly between the participants. If a tournament match results in a draw, the current champion will continue into the next round (Diablo cage only).
Confirming Results

Once a battle has ended, players must trade their official reflectors to a registration officer to confirm match results. Only after confirming match results will participants and monsters receive their rewards. DO NOT forget to complete this process as the results and rewards for each match will only be available for a period of 3 days (Earth Time); after this time they will be lost.

  • The maximum amount of EXP that can be earned in one confirmation is 2000 points. Adventurers with monsters competing in the tournament should confirm results regularly to avoid EXP loss.
Exp Gained

The EXP that you earn is determed by the level of your monster in comparison to the enemy you are fighting.

Level Difference Winning EXP Losing EXP
 8+ Levels Higher 200 100
 6-7 Levels Higher 175 75
 4-5 Levels Higher 150 50

How to customize your monster

I want to make my Pit Monster stronger!

You can customize your monster's stats and abilities in two ways: leveling it up to its true potential, and adding some Feral Skills. Feral Skills are the stats you captured on the Soul Plates, and they can be added to your pet. There are some nice bonuses to be found, such as jobs, subjobs, job traits, Attack Bonus, HP or MP or other stat bonuses, killer traits, instant enhancing buffs, etc.

To add Feral Skills, you must have enough Feral Points (also known as FP). To check how much FP your monster has, trade your Soul Reflector or Official Reflector to one of the following NPCs:

Choose "Confirm FP Total" in the menu. Once you know whether your monster has enough points, you can trade your official or unofficial Soul Reflector to the NPC with the Soul Plate with the desired ability/stat/trait/job. Your monster will gain this bonus for the price of 1 Jetton. PLEASE NOTE: Some jobs may not be added to some categories of monster.

What are Discipline and Temperament?

The following traits will change depending on the type of orders a player gives their monster, as well as the frequency with which he/she gives them:

  • Discipline
The more disciplined your monster is, the more likely it is to correctly respond to orders given during a match.
  • Temperament
Monster temperament is measured in two ways:
Wild vs. Tame
Aggressive vs. Defensive

A monster’s temperament directly affects how it acts during battle. For example, a tame and defensive monster may choose to run away or use stunning techniques on an opponent attempting to cast a powerful spell or use a weapon skill.
