A Guide to Skilling Synergy

This is a feeble attempt to make a somewhat up to date guide for synergy. Why raise Synergy? Well there are some really convenient results from doing it, plus unlike traditional crafts where if you fail you can lose expensive materials, you don't lose them and can just try again.

This guide is designed for quick and easy skilling. For the basics of how to do Synergy please visit the Synergy Page.

Like the other Crafts there is levels and the cap is 80. So you can Max Synergy at 80 without impacting other crafts. Some will require some level of another craft. Unlike leveling a Craft like Smithing or Cooking you can do recipes outside of your skill level. Where as you needed to take a test ever 10 level in order to move on here you don't need to.

What fun stuff can I do with Synergy?:

In the old days synergy was used for Tatter and Scrap Synergy to add augments to old gear to keep them relevant in the pre-iLevel gear days. Examples included adding +cure Potency to Genbu's shield for WHM and -pdt for Crimson Cuisses. Nowadays you see people use it for combining the Old Elemental Staves into either the Iridal Staff or Chatoyant Staff, combining the Elemental Obis into Hachirin-no-Obi or combing the Elemental Gorgets into Fotia Gorget thus saving you 7 inventory slots for each. In addition to those during Login Campaigns SE will have Vanity Items available and when Synergizing 2 of them makes a +1 version that will have hidden effects.

Example: Cumulus Masque x2= Cumulus Masque +1. The result will add the ability to Teleport to Reisenjima once every 20 hours.

Fewells:

Your major cost with this guide is going to be Fewells. Ways to replenish your stock of Fewells is 3 ways:

  • First, you may speak to a Synergy Engineer and have the fewell completely restocked for a less-than-nominal gil fee.
  • Secondly, you may trade crystals of that element to a claimed Synergy Furnace to increase that element's fewell supply by one.
  • Thirdly, you may craft elemental fewell items and trade them to a claimed Synergy Furnace to increase that element's fewell supply by fifty.

My recommendation is to level Alchemy to 30 and make the Fewell. Use the Alchemy Guide by CubsWoo. It shouldn't take long at all to hit 30 maybe less than an hour.

Gear:

Option Name Description Fewell Cost Armor Required
Fishing: Lunar Smarts. Temporarily increase the likelihood of an elemental surge.
Effect varies depending on the moon phase.
5 Element: Fire Fisherman's Smock
Fishing: Precision Thwack. Apply a precisely aimed blow to the furnace to prevent an explosion, with results superior to the standard thwack.
Effect varies depending on moon phase.
* Fisherman's Cuffs
Woodworking: Cyclical Smarts. Deftly manipulate the furnace's internal elemental balance to temporarily mitigate the rate of wear. 10 Element: Earth Carpenter's Smock
Woodworking: Earth Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Earth-based explosions. 5 Element: Wind Carpenter's Cuffs
Smithing: Combustive Smarts. Temporarily improve fewell combustion rate. 10 Element: Water Blacksmith's Smock
Smithing: Fire Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Fire-based explosions. 5 Element: Water Blacksmith's Cuffs
Goldsmithing: Engraver's Touch. Evenly disperse the furnace's internal stress to delay a looming explosion. 10 Element: Light Goldsmith's Smock
Goldsmithing: Wind Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Wind-based explosions. 5 Element: Ice Goldsmith's Cuffs
Clothcraft: Restorer's Touch. Restore furnace durability by a significant amount. 10 Element: Light Weaver's Smock
Clothcraft: Lightning Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Thunder-based explosions. 5 Element: Earth Weaver's Cuffs
Leathercraft: Pressurization Smarts. Temporarily suppress fluctuations in internal pressure. 10 Element: Ice Tanner's Smock
Leathercraft: Ice Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Ice-based explosions. 5 Element: Fire Tanner's Cuffs
Bonecraft: Carbonization Smarts. Temporarily increase the likelihood of an elemental surge. 10 Element: Fire Boneworker's Smock
Bonecraft: Dark Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Dark-based explosions. 5 Element: Light Boneworker's Cuffs
Alchemy: Alchemical Smarts. Temporarily suppress the force of explosions. 10 Element: Earth Alchemist's Smock
Alchemy: Light Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Light-based explosions. 5 Element: Dark Alchemist's Cuffs
Cooking: Heating Smarts. Gradually purge the furnace of impurities. 10 Element: Light Culinarian's Smock
Cooking: Water Affinity. Keenly observe the flow of elements to prevent Element: Water-based explosions. 5 Element: Thunder Culinarian's Cuffs

Note: Actions marked with a * reduce furnace durability (or HP), with Precision Thwack reducing less than a normal Thwack.

These actions are meant to improve the chances of a successful synergy by staving off explosions by clearing out impurities and lowering the damage of explosions by reducing pressure. The craft-specific abilities are accessed by wearing the cuffs or smocks for that craft. Having the appropriate craft skill is not required to equip the cuffs or to gain access to the attached abilities.

  • The abilities granted by Cuffs function as specialized Thwacks with extremely high success rates. (Much higher than 5/5 Thwacking.)
    • They don't appear to reduce furnace HP.
    • When successful, reduces impurity level to 5%.

Leveling

The idea, as mentioned in the Synergy page, is to choose a recipe and to overfeed an Elemental Fewell associated with the recipe until it overloads and then thwack the furnace to reduce the overload and continue feeding fewell. IF you do have an explosion then just reselect the crucible and keep going.

In the past general thinking was to get a really high recipe and spam it til you reach the cap and this strategy is still fine. The problem with this is that using a recipe too far from your skill will cause faster explosions and you'll have less time with the crucible. To keep this from happening I decided to use smaller jumps so that you can maximize your time trying to get skill ups. Once you make 5 levels you can upgrade your abilities by 1 to a max of 5 for each of the 6 abilities. So take time every 5 levels to upgrade them.

So with that again from the old days the goal was to use Earth Fewell since you can cast Haste on you to prevent the slow effect associated with it.

Also it seems the Kupower Artisan's Advantage DOES apply to Synergy so you can think about timing your leveling with that.

About the leaves

Again in the old days the most common skill up item used was the Gold Leaf Mythril Leaf and Platinum Leaf. These were obtained from Mog HOUSE Gardening which we know is not done nowadays with the advent of the Mog Garden. With that, thanks to Subadai and Byrthnoth flushing out the Garden Furrow page we now have a target "Seed" to plant and "fertilizer" to use so that we can obtain those. The ""seed" will have a possibility of having a leaf as a harvested item and the Fertilizer will add a possibly harvested leaf. A decent combo of seeds and fertilizer is provided below.

Level Ranges

1-29

Federation Earring - Federation Waystone + Silver Earring
There isn't a large variety before 20 so head to Windurst Woods (I-8) and grab a Waystone from Wije Tiren. For the Silver Earring you can make one assuming you have Goldsmithing @ 17+ or get one from Drogza in Port Windurst (H-7). This takes you to 29 so from there we head to the next one.

Fisherman's Cuffs - Red Rock, Purple Rock, Karakul Cloth, Ruszor Leather x2.
IF you have fishing skilled to Novice (Level 31-40) this is a good one to actually complete. This enhances Thwack.

Carpenter's Cuffs - Green Rock, Translucent Rock, Karakul Cloth, Ruszor Leather x2.
Since we'll be using Earth Fawell this allows you to help prevent Earth Based explosions. If you don't have Woodworking Level 31-40 then never mind.

Genbu Scrap - Seal of Genbu.
this is an easy one if you have one hanging around or don't mind grabbing the pops to get Genbu. Genbu now drops 2 seals so bring a friend, relive nostalgia.

30-39

Kazham Earring - Kazham Waystone + Silver Earring
Just like with the Federation Earring, head to Kazham (G-7) and grab a Waystone from Ghemi Sinterilo. For the Silver Earring nothing has changed. This takes you to 39 so from there we head to the next one.

40-49

Silver Nugget - Silver Leaf x4 + Vitriol x2.
So here we start to have the one that is similar to what people use to use primarily for skill ups. Here we ride this to 45 and move on to that one.

Empire Earring - Empire Waystone + Silver Earring
Just like with the Federation Earring, head to Aht Urhgan Whitegate (H-11) and grab a Waystone from Khaf Jhifanm. For the Silver Earring nothing has changed. This takes you to 49 so from there we head to the next one.

Crafting Smocks - Crafting Aprons
With the exception of the Fisherman's Smock all have Earth as an element in making them so "ASSUMING" you have the Apron for your craft you can just do this for skill.

50-59

Mythril Nugget - Mythril Leaf x4 + Vitriol x2.
Again as mentioned you will start to get fewer explosions since this recipe is closer to your level at this point. If no Leaves are available you can grow them or just find a craft specific Synergy to use instead.

Nashmau Earring - Nashmau Waystone + Silver Earring.
This one is really the only alternative. Of the 3 elements pick Fire or Water. Pipiroon (H-6) sells the waystone.

60-69

From here there's not much you can do. You can do the Gold Nugget or one of the craft specific synergy.

Gold Nugget - Gold Leaf x4 + Vitriol x2.
Same as before. If no Leaves are available you can grow them or just find a craft specific Synergy to use instead.

70-79

At this point you are kind of stuck without having a high level craft elsewhere. I'll just point out the most common ones I found.

Platinum Nugget - Platinum Leaf x4 + Vitriol x2.
Once more with Feeling! If no Leaves are available you can grow them or just find a craft specific Synergy to use instead.

Craft Specific Craftsman Crafts - Various materials
Here you have one special furnishing for each craft. These are good to do from 70-75.

80

Craft Stalls - Various Materials
Here you can skill off your crafting stall. This takes a LOT of Fewell so stock up on the one for your craft before hand.
