Naming Customs (Lore)

Naming Customs are a cultural aspect which can give us an insight into a culture's values. Usually names are given at birth, but they could also be given or earned after an exploit.

Hume Names

• Humes have the widest spread population as well as the widest variety of names.
  • As a rule, Hume names don't follow any special rules.
• In the Southern Quon regions, Humes have Germanic-sounding names:
  • Males have names like Karst, Piotr, Wolfgang.
  • Females have names like Maymunah, Hilda, Adelheid (Heidi).

Elvaan Names

• Elvaan males tend to have elaborate names appropriate for heroes in an epic tale. Examples include Palardaifault, Monberaux, Eauvague.
  • Their names may look French, but can differ in their pronunciation: the great sage Raillefal explains his name is pronounced like "rye-fall".
• Elvaan females typically have shorter names that are easier to pronounce. Examples include Claidie, Ulmia, Ailevia.

Elvaan Middle Initials

• Elvaan often just use a first name, but can use a middle initial and last name.
  • Middle initials relate to their rank in either the nobility or the clergy.

Tarutaru Names

• Male Tarutaru have names where the first and second part rhyme. This is thought to be similar to incantations of ancient spells. Examples include Ajido-Marujido, Karaha-Baruha, Mano-Amano.
• Female Tarutaru have names where the last mora is repeated. Examples include Chamama, Rukususu, Shantotto.
  • The last part of the name is not random, is it based on the orientation of the child in relation to the Star Tree at the time of birth.
• Names of locations like Sarutabaruta and Kolshushu may resemble Tarutaru names, but it is a only coincidence of the Tarutaru language. Sarutabaruta means "Land of Prophecy" in the Tarutaru tongue, while Kolshushu means "Land of Decision".

Mithra Names

• Mithra use a first name and family name. Their first names are short, just one or two syllables. This has a practical reason: while hunting, Mithra will call each other by their first names. Examples include Cha Lebagta, An Polaali, Jakoh Wahcondalo.

Galka Names

• Galkan names will have rough-sounding syllables, often using hard consonants. Maybe their names are part of their strength. Examples include Dalzakk, Gumbah, Zeid.
• Humes find Galkan names hard to remember or pronounce, and give Galka another name. Expect there to be a story behind each name. Examples include Big Harvest, Iron Eater, Eternal Flame.

Goblin Names

• Male names end in -ix. Fablinix, Muckvix, Fickblix.
• Female names end in -ox. Leadavox, Gambilox, Drachlox.
