From FFXI Wiki

Caught at 22:10 game time after leaving the Central Landing. This is the one at (E-6) from Jugner. It was the only "!!!" large fish bite I got with a Fly Lure equipped. Easy to reel in with max skill and skill+. The NPC will say when your in the Newtpool and when you almost arrive at the edge. Because it is a large fish, the Puffin Ring should help. Caught on my first ride attempt. Got around 10 small bites before catching it. Funkworkz (talk) 22:28, 27 July 2021 (EDT)

Bait Choice

Tip: If the South Landing Ferry (Survival Guide) is out of service (20 min wait), try the North Landing Ferry (via N. San d'Oria HP #4). Can catch that one quicker to Central Landing to go onwards via Newtpool route. Hookable only when ferry passes through its habitat--denoted by NPC dialogue.

Note: Is this thing really 103? Says so on Great Blue as well but I got two "Lost your catch due to your lack of skill" messages at 116, while doing fine on the other 110+ fish.

Puffin Ring with Fly Lure:
Ride #1, no bite, many small ! bites.
Ride #2, large !!! bite (after several small ! bites) with easy reel but lost "due to your lack of skill" message.
Ride #3, no bite.

Switched to Lufaise Fly:
Ride #4, large !!! bite with easy reel but lost again "due to your lack of skill" message.
Ride #5, no bite.
Ride #6, large !!! bite and finally caught.

Sample size of 6, so meaningless, but somehow makes sense to me live bait is preferred. You only have one shot to hook it per ride, really. (Why would the devs go through the trouble of introducing a new single unique CoP bait to catch a single new CoP unique fish if it didn’t have +% hook rate boost?) JP Wiki also notes: [Machine translation] However, if you have frogfishing and use a Lufaise fly, your hit rate increases significantly. Even so, it's only about whether you get hit once during a single boarding.

Good luck!
