• Mahuika is the Maori goddess of fire, an ancestress of Māui. When mortals lost the utility of fire, Māui sought out Mahuika's secret of using it on command. Māui begged of her to give him the gift of fire, and she removed one of her five fingers (each representing her five Fire Children) and gave it to him. Māui deviously took it away and extinguished it. He returned to Mahuika and told her it had gone out. This pattern continued until only one finger remained. Mahuika was enraged, removed her last child, and hurled it at Māui, causing a massive fire. Māui narrowly escaped.
  
  Nga Manawa, spawned in the same battlefield, is named after the collective name of Mahuika's five Fire Children.
