Base player maximum speed was originally 4.0, but was increased by 25% to 5.0 in December 2013. Every +0.1 therefore represents +2% movement speed, and all speed adjustments are multiples of this value. Although gear was adjusted to compensate for the base speed change, job abilities and other enhancements were not, and the global cap was not increased. For example, Flee, which originally increased movement speed by 100% (to 8.0/4.0), is still subject to the global cap of 8.0, resulting in a movement speed increase of 60% (8.0/5.0). Similarly, buffs that used to increase movement speed by 25% (+1.0/4.0) now increase it by 20% (+1.0/5.0). |
|||
Base player maximum speed is 4 yalms per minute. With 12% movement speed, it is almost 4.5 yalms per minute. |

There are various clunky ways to quantify movement speed (Ex. example), but the easiest way is to look at the speed number sent in packets. Windower's SpeedChecker addon does this. |
||
* Find a nice, flat, level piece of ground with an NPC 48' away. |
|||
* Load the wait plugin and make a script that looks like this: |
|||
**input /follow <t> |
|||
**wait 12 |
|||
**input /echo There! |
|||
* Initially, when you run the script it should pull you towards your target, and say "There!" pretty much exactly when you pause because you have hit the target's character model. |
|||
* If the ground is a little uneven, it can be a little off. Adjust the "12" to be whatever works, set a very definite "cue" for yourself (like hitting the target's body), and note it. |
|||
* Repeat the test using whatever movement speed you're interested in and find your new delay. |
|||
* Old delay / New delay = Movement Speed. |
|||
Here is an example of how this can be used. |

The effects of spells, abilities, and equipment stack up to a certain limit (the only exception is that Mazurka and Chocobo Jig do not stack with one another). Mazurka, Chocobo Jig, and Bolter's Roll effects all wear off when the player performs any offensive ability or is attacked. |
|||
*Atma of Ambition: +12% |

Temporary significant movement speed boosts (+100%) override all other movement speed bonuses and do not stack with any of them (but are still penalized by movement speed penalties): |

The effects of spells, abilities, and equipment stack up to the maximum movement speed of +60%. All sources stack additively, with several notable exceptions: |
|||
* Only the highest value from equipment counts. |

* Mazurka and Quickening effects do not stack, despite the fact that both can be active at the same time. |
|||
* Bolter's Roll's effect is multiplicative with equipment, but not with other sources. |

Thus, the closed form is: |
|||

All volatile effects wear off when the player takes any offensive action against an enemy, or is the target of any offensive action, even if the action is evaded or resisted. |

The Quickening enchantments of Sprinter's Shoes and Talaria stack with other movement speed equipment, and once the enchantment is in effect they can be swapped out for other equipment. Movement speed is one of the few variables in FFXI that is entirely controlled clientside. It is also one of the few things that will unarguably improve your in game "quality of life." Running from place to place is the vast majority of what you do in FFXI, so moving 12% faster makes you almost 12% more efficient.
Quantification
There are various clunky ways to quantify movement speed (Ex. example), but the easiest way is to look at the speed number sent in packets. Windower's SpeedChecker addon does this.
Enhancement Bonuses
Movement speed can be directly affected by certain spells, abilities, key item effects, items and enchantments, and equipment.
Active Effects
- Atma of Ambition: +12%
- Atma of the Master Crafter: +12%
- Cheer: Jumbotender: +2%
Temporary Effects
- Flee: +60%
- Sprinter's Drink: +60%
- Hermes Quencher: +60%
Volatile Effects
- Raptor Mazurka: +10%
- Chocobo Mazurka: +20%
- Bolter's Roll: x1.0~1.62
- Chocobo Jig (Quickening): +20%
- Fleet Wind (Quickening): +20%
- Sprinter's Shoes/Talaria (Quickening): +10%
The effects of spells, abilities, and equipment stack up to the maximum movement speed of +60%. All sources stack additively, with several notable exceptions:
- Only the highest value from equipment counts.
- Mazurka and Quickening effects do not stack, despite the fact that both can be active at the same time.
- Bolter's Roll's effect is multiplicative with equipment, but not with other sources.
Thus, the closed form is:
(100% + max(Equipment)) * Roll + max(Quickening, Mazurka) + sum(Active) + sum(Temporary) <= 160%
All volatile effects wear off when the player takes any offensive action against an enemy, or is the target of any offensive action, even if the action is evaded or resisted.
Debuff Reduction
Movement speed is directly reduced by the Weight status inflicted by the spell Gravity or monster abilities with a Gravity effect. This penalty can range from mild (-12%) to very significant (nearly immobile) depending on what caused the weight effect.
Monster movement speed can be reduced by successfully landing Gravity or Gravity II.
Equipment Bonuses
Note that while positive movement speed bonuses on equipment DO NOT stack (only the highest bonus equipped takes effect), negative movement speed equipment does stack. The Quickening enchantments of Sprinter's Shoes and Talaria stack with other movement speed equipment, and once the enchantment is in effect they can be swapped out for other equipment. While each job has at least one always active +12% or higher movement speed equipment piece available, some are considerably more difficult to acquire than others.
