Movement Speed
Movement speed is one of the few variables in FFXI that is entirely controlled clientside. It is also one of the few things that will unarguably improve your in game "quality of life." Running from place to place is the vast majority of what you do in FFXI, so moving 12% faster makes you almost 12% more efficient.
Base player maximum speed is 4 yalms per minute. With 12% movement speed, it is almost 4.5 yalms per minute.
Quantification
There are various third party ways of quantifying movement speed, but the simplest (and least plugin intensive) is this test:
- Find a nice, flat, level piece of ground with an NPC 48' away.
- Load the wait plugin and make a script that looks like this:
- input /follow <t>
- wait 12
- input /echo There!
- Initially, when you run the script it should pull you towards your target, and say "There!" pretty much exactly when you pause because you have hit the target's character model.
- If the ground is a little uneven, it can be a little off. Adjust the "12" to be whatever works, set a very definite "cue" for yourself (like hitting the target's body), and note it.
- Repeat the test using whatever movement speed you're interested in and find your new delay.
- Old delay / New delay = Movement Speed.
Here is an example of how this can be used.
Enhancement Bonuses
Movement speed is directly affected by certain spells, abilities, and other enhancements:
- Raptor Mazurka: +12% Movement Speed
- Chocobo Mazurka: +25% Movement Speed
- Chocobo Jig: +25% Movement Speed
- Bolter's Roll: Up to +25% Movement Speed
- Atma of Ambition: +12% Movement Speed
- Atma of the Master Crafter: +12% Movement Speed
The effects of spells, abilities, and equipment stack up to a certain limit (the only exception is that Mazurka and Chocobo Jig do not stack with one another). Mazurka, Chocobo Jig, and Bolter's Roll effects all wear off when the player performs any offensive ability or is attacked.
Temporary significant movement speed boosts (+100%) override all other movement speed bonuses and do not stack with any of them:
Equipment Bonuses
Note that while positive movement speed bonuses on equipment DO NOT stack (only the highest bonus equipped takes effect), negative movement speed equipment does stack. The enchantments of Sprinter's Shoes and Talaria do stack with other movement speed equipment, but they cannot be removed while their enchantments are in effect. While each job has at least one always active +12% or higher movement speed equipment piece available, some are considerably more difficult to acquire than others.
