Overview
Songs are a unique magic category only available to Bards. Unlike other forms of magic, two distinct component skills combined together calculate the value of a song's effectiveness — a Singing skill and an Instrument skill. The Instrument skill consists of either Wind or String depending on the instrument type equipped, for example either a Flute or a Harp. These two skills together are referred to as "combined skill," a value which determines the potency and accuracy of songs.
Furthermore, unlike other types of magic, songs cannot be interrupted by enemy attacks, rendering spell interruption unnecessary for singing.
Bard songs are divided into two primary categories:
1. Party-targeted buffing songs, and
2. Enemy-targeted debuffing songs.
Note: The exact mechanics behind the Magic Accuracy of debuffing songs are not fully understood; however, it is generally accepted that it scales with the Bard’s Charisma (CHR) and combined skill, multiplied by a scaling factor.
By default, a Bard equipped with an instrument may maintain two active buffing songs on party members. Casting additional songs beyond this limit will overwrite the song with the shortest remaining duration. Bard’s 1-hour SP Ability, Clarion Call, permits a third active buffing song.
Note: The same song cannot be reapplied until its current remaining duration is less than its base (unenhanced) duration. Unique songs will always overwrite an existing active song, but they will only overwrite the song with the lowest remaining duration.
When no instrument is equipped, or when a player is using Bard as a subjob, only one buffing song may be maintained.
Certain specialized instruments, including the Blurred Harp, Terpander, Miracle Cheer, Loughnashade, and Daurdabla, enable a Bard to extend the limit to three or four active buffs, and up to five when used in conjunction with Clarion Call.
It is also important to note that there are 12 shared buff 'slots' between Bard songs and Corsair’s Phantom Roll. Once this limit is reached, new buffs will overwrite older ones in the order they were applied.

Song Effect Duration
- Song duration equipment does affect offensive debuff durations.
- The base duration of a party buff song is 120s.
- Song+ potency gear increases duration by 10% per 1 Song+.
- All gear song effect duration bonuses are additive with each other, as well as additive with the duration increase from song+ potency effects.
- For example, March +1 on Fili Manchettes +1 would extend March by 10%, +12s, in addition to enhancing its potency by 1; with Inyanga Shalwar +2 (+17%) as well, a March would have a total duration boost of +27%.
- This means the Aeonic Instrument Marsyas does have 10% longer duration boost than the Level 99 Relic Instrument Gjallarhorn, but lacks any potency boost for party buffs that Gjallarhorn has.
- Whether equipment says "Song effect duration +10" or "Song effect duration +10%", these values are the same +10% duration increase.
- Troubadour doubles the total duration after all other duration bonuses are applied.
- For example, March +1 on Fili Manchettes +1 would extend March by 10%, +12s, in addition to enhancing its potency by 1; with Inyanga Shalwar +2 (+17%) as well, a March would have a total duration boost of +27%.
- The chart below does not include song+ bonuses.
