Category:Tutorial NPC

Added in the September 2008 update, Tutorial NPCs will help new players on their first steps in the world of Vana'diel. This is done through a series of assignments, in which people will become familiar with battling, Signet, crafting, and some other basic actions.

These quests were updated in April 2026, allowing players who have completed the quests to re-take them to earn the new rewards.

If you created your character before the September 2008 Version Update, or if you have already completed the last assignment given by the Tutorial NPCs, they will simply provide information about Skillchains, Magic Bursts, and search commands.

Before each quest is given, the NPC will provide tutorial information about various aspects of the game which is worth reading if you've never played before.

Tutorial NPCs are at the following locations:

The NPCs will also walk towards you and force you into conversation when you go to leave the city for the first time.

Bastok

Quest 1

• Talk to Gulldago for a small introduction.
• He asks you to get Signet from the gate guard located to the left hand side of the gate (Rabid Wolf, I.M.).
• Once you have the Signet effect talk to Gulldago again to acquire six Meat Jerky.

Quest 2

• Eat a strip of your Meat Jerky then speak to Gulldago again.

Quest 3

• He will now ask you to master a Weapon Skill. To do this fight mobs outside the gate until your weapon's combat skill reaches 5 and you learn a usable Weapon Skill.
• Use your weapon skill (in the "Abilites" menu) on a mob and then go back to Gulldago for your reward of 100 gil.

Quest 4

• Speak to Gulldago again, he will request you complete the Records of Eminence objective First Step Forward.
• Manually flag the objective from your Quests menu, then speak to Isakoth to complete it. Keep this NPC in mind as you continue your journey, as they will be your primary source of Equipment and Gil early on. Also, get accustomed to the Records of Eminence menu, as the rewards in Sparks and Experience Points these objectives offer will help you progress substantially faster.
• Return to Gulldago to complete this quest and earn your reward of one each of Fire Crystal, Honey, and Lizard Tail, and will suggest using them to synthesize the food item Sweet Lizard.
  • Synthesize these materials together by selecting the Fire Crystal in your items list, select use, then select the Lizard Tail and Pot of Honey and click OK.

Quest 5

• Next Gulldago asks you to find the auction house (check your map for the gavel icon).
• All you have to do is click on the Auction house booth, you don't have to buy or sell anything.
• Talk to Gulldago again and he will reward you with a Conquest promotion voucher.
• At the gate talk to Rabid Wolf, I.M. (Bastok Markets).
• Select "I want to spend my conquest points", select "Common items", then select either a Chariot Band, Empress Band or Emperor Band.
  • Your Conquest promotion voucher will be exchanged for your ring choice. Empress Band offers the most total Experience points and is the recommended selection.

Quest 6

• Now Gulldago asks you to kill mobs to obtain level 5.
• You can do this right outside the gates or you can go to Zeruhn Mines (accessible from Bastok Mines).
• Once you have obtained level 5, go back to Gulldago and he will give you a Raising Earring.
  • Note: If you are re-doing this quest, you may need to drop your existing Raising Earring (and zone to empty your recycle bin) in order to obtain a new one and progress to the next quest.

Quest 7

• Gulldago now wants you to learn Trust magic.
• Complete Trust: Bastok, then return to him for the extremely valuable Warp Ring.
  • This ring has infinite uses on a ten minute recast. After equipping, waiting the eight second ready time, then using it, it will send you back to wherever you have set your Home Point.
  • Note: If you are re-doing this quest, you may need to drop your existing Warp Ring (and zone to empty your recycle bin) in order to obtain a new one and progress to the next quest.

Quest 8

• Now Gulldago will teach you about Survival Guides. Like Home Points, these can be teleported between for a small fee, the only caveat is you may only travel between those you have examined.
• Travel to the Survival Guides in Bastok Mines (I-9) near the South Gustaberg zone; and North Gustaberg (D-10) near the regional Outpost.
• Return to Gulldago once more to earn 12x Saltena

Quest 9

• Gulldago will now task you with reaching level 18.
• Speak to him on any job level 18 or above for your reward of Copper A.M.A.N. Voucher. These may be stored with Isakoth and exchanged for various currencies at your desire.

Quest 10

• Gulldago's final task for you is to acquire a Support Job.
• Do this either via completion of Elder Memories or The Old Lady, or by using Gilgamesh's introductory letter earned by completing Rhapsodies of Vana'diel Mission Set Free.
• Set a Support job either at your Mog House or a Nomad Moogle, then return to Gulldago for your reward of 12x Chocopass and the extremely useful leveling item Echad Ring.

San d'Oria

Quest 1

• Talk to Alaune for a small introduction.
• She asks you to get Signet from the gate guard located to the left hand side of the gate (Aravoge, T.K.).
• Once you have the Signet effect talk to Alaune again to acquire six Meat Jerky.

Quest 2

• Eat a strip of your Meat Jerky then speak to Alaune again.

Quest 3

• She will now ask you to master a Weapon Skill. To do this fight mobs outside the gate until your weapon's combat skill reaches 5 and you learn a usable Weapon Skill.
• Use your weapon skill (in the "Abilites" menu) on a mob and then go back to Alaune for your reward of 100 gil.

Quest 4

Quest 5

Windurst

• Once you have the Signet effect talk to Selele again to acquire six Meat Jerky.

• She will now ask you to master a Weapon Skill. To do this fight mobs outside the gate until your weapon's combat skill reaches 5 and you learn a usable Weapon Skill.
• Use your weapon skill (in the "Abilites" menu) on a mob and then go back to Alaune for your reward of 100 gil.

Quest 4

• Speak to Selele again, she will request you complete the Records of Eminence objective First Step Forward.

  • Synthesize these materials together by selecting the Water Crystal in your items list, select use, then select the Bird Egg and Pot of Honey and click OK.

Quest 5

• Next Selele asks you to find the auction house (check your map for the gavel icon).
• All you have to do is click on the Auction house booth, you don't have to buy or sell anything.
• Talk to Selele again and he will reward you with a Conquest promotion voucher.
• At the gate talk to Harara, W.W. (Windurst Woods).
