Missions are tasks that a player performs to advance in the main story lines of Final Fantasy XI. Rewards for missions vary. Missions for the three starting cities can reward the player with higher ranks, Gil, national flags, and the ability to purchase new items with Conquest Points. Missions from the expansion areas allow players to unlock previously inaccessible areas, gain special equipment, and sometimes participate in follow-up quests that expand upon the story lines.

New Player Note: Because the game maintained a level cap of 75 through multiple expansions, many of the level 75 mission battles were designed to challenge endgame players at that time. Often requiring strategies such as sleeping enemies or the use of SP abilities to guarantee success. The Trust system did not exist, nor have these battles been updated to accommodate that system. While they certainly can be completed on-level using Trusts, and even solo, many players will encounter a sharp increase in difficulty that either requires some careful planning and trust selection, or should be attempted at a slightly higher level. Many have suggested that level 80 still provides a challenge while not seeming impossible. Proceed as you will, but know that death and frustration may lie ahead and there's no shame in a few more levels, we'd have done it too if we could!
